An article from across the pond.

William Hague, the shadow foreign secretary, yesterday defended the Conservatives' alliance with far-right parties in Europe during a meeting in Washington with the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.

Hague sought to reassure Clinton about the Conservatives' partners, some of whose members have taken part in commemoration services for the Waffen-SS in Latvia and questioned the need to apologise for an anti-Jewish pogrom in Poland.

The shadow foreign secretary, who said he had an excellent meeting with Clinton, told her the accusations were part of a smear campaign by the Guardian and others.

The row has overshadowed Hague's visit to Washington intended as part of the Conservative preparations for taking power.

The state department was careful not be drawn into the issue, not wanting to be accused of interference in UK politics or issues relating to the European parliament. A spokesman said: "I can say that the two had a good, wide-ranging discussion on a broad range of issues, but can't get into details or substance of that discussion."

Hague tried to persuade Clinton that the Conservatives' Euroscepticism would not necessarily mean Britain would play a lesser role in European affairs. The US favours the EU acting in unison over Iran and other issues.
Hague said he had raised the allegations of antisemitism with Clinton at the end of a 40-minute discussion on Iran, the Balkans, the Middle East, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and climate change.

"No one has raised with me all day the other issue, of the parties in our grouping, but I raised that with secretary of state Clinton because of press reports in your newspaper [the Guardian] and others in case she had seen those," Hague said. "I have assured her they are mainstream parties of the centre-right … The Conservative party rejects what it regards as a smear campaign against some of its members."

Don't know much about the EU, but I'm, of course, against anti-Semitism.

Here's a little something about the European Union, from wikipedia:

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 27 Member States, located primarily in Europe.[7][8][9][10] Committed to regional integration, the EU was established by the Treaty of Maastricht on 1 November 1993 upon the foundations of the pre-existing European Economic Community.[11] With almost 500 million citizens, the EU combined generates an estimated 30% share (US$18.4 trillion in 2008) of the nominal gross world product.[12]

The EU has developed a single market through a standardised system of laws which apply in all Member States, ensuring the freedom of movement of people, goods, services, and capital.[13] It maintains common policies on trade,[14]agriculture, fisheries[15] and regional development.[16] Sixteen Member States have adopted a common currency, the euro, constituting the Eurozone. The EU has developed a limited role in foreign policy, having representation at the WTO, G8, G20 and at the UN. It enacts legislation in justice and home affairs, including the abolition of passport controls between many Member States which form part of the Schengen Area.[17]

As an international organisation, the EU operates through a hybrid system of supranationalism and intergovernmentalism.[18][19][20] In certain areas, it depends upon agreement between the Member States; in others, supranational bodies are able to make sovereign decisions without unanimity. Important institutions and bodies of the EU include the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, the European Council, the European Court of Justice, and the European Central Bank. The European Parliament is elected every five years by Member States' citizens, to whom the citizenship of the European Union is guaranteed.

The EU traces many of its origins to the European Coal and Steel Community formed among six countries in 1951 and the Treaty of Rome in 1957.[21][22][23] Since then the union has grown in size through the accession of new countries, and new policy areas have been added to the remit of the EU's institutions.

Jen, I've been gone for a day or so. Just checked in for a few minutes today. You have been on a roll! Thanks for finding these excellent articles.
