I'm all for free speech and I'm concerned about what has been happening in Europe lately, where people who criticize Islam are charged with hate crimes or whatever. I'm glad Hillary is speaking out on this.
US SECRETARY of State Hillary Clinton has come out strongly against laws around the world that make religious defamation a crime, saying freedom of speech and religion should be equally upheld.
"Some claim that the best way to protect the freedom of religion is to implement so-called 'anti-defamation' policies that would restrict freedom of expression and the freedom of religion," she said on presenting a department report on religious freedom.
"I strongly disagree. The United States will always ... stand against discrimination and persecution ... But an individual's ability to practice his or her religion has no bearing on others' freedom of speech," Clinton said.
"The protection of speech about religion is particularly important since persons of different faith will inevitably hold divergent views on religious questions. These differences should be met with tolerance, not with the suppression of discourse," she added.
It's a slippery slope. I have also been concerned with the sort of language Pelosi and the Obama team have used widely against protesters in D.C. I am not in agreement with a lot of what is being protested because there seems to be a very far right agenda there. HOWEVER, they have as much right to protest as the left did when they marched there against the war and should not ever have been called "Nazis" by a high ranking official such as Pelosi. Neither should it have been said they were "tea baggers" or worst of all "All racists" This is as dangerous and silly as when Vietnam was going on and everyone from Nixon on down was saying they were all "communists" good god.
A lot of inflammatory language is being thrown around by our own government lately too.
In Europe it's become about Islam who are trying to control every single facet of what goes on around them. It's not hate speech to disagree with them on lots of things. Hillary is right. It's a powerful statement for someone like her to speak out that way. Hopefully this will help influence those who think Islam has some very dangerous practices against women and girls to be able to speak out MORE.
"The protection of speech about religion is particularly important since persons of different faith will inevitably hold divergent views on religious questions. These differences should be met with tolerance, not with the suppression of discourse," she added.
I'm very glad that Hillary has taken this position. Freedom of speech is being eroded in many subtle ways, currently. Curtailing it further is not only unnecessary, imo, it's dangerous.
