5.8-magnitude earthquake near Mexicali shakes desert
Staff and wire reports • The Desert Sun • December 30, 2009
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake centered 20 miles southeast of Mexicali occurred at 10:48 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was originally reported as a magnitude 5.9 and was felt throughout the Coachella Valley. The USGS has also reported three aftershocks ranging from 3.4 to 4.9 in intensity since, all centered in the same spot.
"My husband felt it and I looked up and the chandelier started swinging," said Gayle Wilson of Palm Springs, who has lived in the Coachella Valley for 22 years. "Whenever that happens, I know that it’s got to be a more than a 4.0."
