Hats off to Hillary Clinton! I am all admiration for Hillary. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CBS news
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will travel to Haiti tomorrow to review the United States' ongoing relief efforts.
Clinton will travel with Dr. Rajiv Shah, administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the secretary announced today. They will meet with Haitian President Rene Preval and other members of the Haitian government, as well as U.S. civilian and military leaders guiding the relief efforts from Haiti.
"We will also be conveying very directly and personally to the Haitian people our long term, unwavering support, solidarity and sympathies to reinforce President Obama's message that they are not facing this crisis alone," Clinton said. "I will also be able to see firsthand the ongoing efforts and deployment of U.S. government personnel and resources for maximum impact to support the vital lifesaving relief and recovery efforts."
Clinton announced today that the American Red Cross, with the assistance of the State Department, has raised more than $10 million from more than one million donors via its SMS Haiti Relief Campaign -- the largest mobile donation campaign ever. She also announced a new online tool through which people can search for missing persons in Haiti. The tool is available at www.state.gov/Haitiquake.
WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she will travel to Haiti on Saturday to see earthquake relief efforts first hand, deliver supplies and meet Haitian President Rene Preval.
Clinton, who cut short her tour of the Asia-Pacific region this past week, told reporters in Washington on Friday that she made the decision after consulting with US President Barack Obama.
"I will be taking supplies with me... I will also be meeting President Preval," said Clinton who will be travelling with US Agency for International Development (USAID) Coordinator Rajiv Shah and other officials.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will fly to Haiti on Saturday to get a firsthand look at the earthquake relief effort as well as to help evacuate some Americans caught up in the disaster.
Clinton, who cut short a trip to the Asia-Pacific region after Tuesday's quake, said on Friday she and U.S. Agency for International Development Director Rajiv Shah would meet Haitian President Rene Preval as well as U.S. relief workers.
"We will also be conveying very directly and personally to the Haitian people our long-term unwavering support, solidarity and sympathies," Clinton told a news briefing.
Haitian authorities said on Friday they believed 140,000 people died in the quake that devastated the impoverished Caribbean nation and that three-quarters of the capital, Port-au-Prince, would need to be rebuilt.
Clinton said details of her trip were being worked out but that she planned to bring relief supplies as well as helping to evacuate some Americans.
"I will be bringing out some American citizens who are waiting for evacuation, so there are some very tangible reasons for this," Clinton said.
She said every effort would be made not to allow her visit to interfere with the relief effort.
"I will not be leaving the airport area, so I will not be using assets like automobiles that should be better used for transporting rescue workers or medical personnel," she said.
Clinton said the trip would give her and her team a firsthand look at how the relief effort was unfolding, which she could then convey to other world leaders, adding the United States backed the idea of a donor conference at some point in the future.
"I've spoken to a number of foreign ministers and heads of state who are asking questions about how things are operating and what they can do to contribute. It just gives you a level of credibility," Clinton said of the trip.
She said that while U.N. peacekeepers appeared to be doing their best to control the security situation, conditions on the ground remained "tough" and demanded swift action.
"We're aware that there are all kinds of potential problems on the horizon," Clinton said.
"It's a race against time," she added. "Everybody is pushing as hard as they can."
I've been lighting candles for Hillary and for the people of Haiti. If anyone else would like to do so, here's the link:
Thank you Jen. What an appropriate thing to do. I'm following your link now, to light some candles, as well. Heaven knows the Haitians and those who are working so hard to help them need and deserve our support.

I am proud of her. She isn't going to be using cars because the people who can rescue or help in some way needs it. She is going to make one hell of a POTUS

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met Saturday with Haitian President Rene Preval and promised that U.S. quake relief efforts would be closely coordinated with local officials.
Clinton's remarks appeared designed to counter any notion of a too-intrusive American involvement in the aftermath of the quake, while also assuring Haitians the humanitarian mission would continue as long as it's needed.
"We are here at the invitation of your government to help you," she said at a news conference at the Port-au-Prince airport. "As President Obama has said, we will be here today, tomorrow and for the time ahead. And speaking personally, I know of the great resilience and strength of the Haitian people. You have been severely tested. But I believe that Haiti can come back even stronger and better in the future."
Clinton, the highest-ranking Obama administration official to visit since the magnitude-7.0 quake struck Tuesday, arrived in a Coast Guard C-130 transport that carried bottled water, packaged food, soap and other supplies. She was accompanied by Rajiv Shah, the U.S. Agency for International Development administrator who is acting as the top U.S. relief coordinator.
Clinton also met with U.N. officials and U.S. civilians and military personnel working on the relief effort. She said she and Preval discussed his government's priorities: restoring communications, electricity and transportation.
"And we agreed that we will be coordinating closely together to achieve these goals," she said, adding that she and Preval would issue a communique on Sunday outlining cooperation between the two countries.
Preval said he was encouraged to see former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush together with President Barack Obama at the White House earlier Saturday in a joint plea for international assistance to Haiti.
He noted that U.S. aid has already arrived, and he told reporters he met a survivor who was pulled from the rubble Saturday and receiving care from American medical teams. He thanked Clinton for her visit and for Obama's continued support of Haiti.
"Mrs. Clinton's visit really warms our heart today," he said.
Does anyone notice the difference between when its Hillary who gets the 3 am call and when its Janet Napolatano who gets the call. Hillary wakes the President up and then deals with the Crisis and Janet well she lets the President get his beauty rest and then she falls apart and doesn't handle the crisis.
