Dems see challenges in midterm elections

WASHINGTON, Jan 16, 2010 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Democratic Party strategists say they are gearing up for some challenging U.S. midterm election races throughout the country later this year.

Mike Lux, a Democratic political strategist, told U.S. News & World Report Friday that one such race, to replace the retiring U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., may work out well for Democrats because Connecticut State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat expected to run for Dodd's seat, has high positives.

It may be a different story in North Dakota, however, where popular Republican Gov. John Hoeven is expected to make a run for the Senate seat now held by retiring Democrat Byron Dorgan, U.S. News said.

Another Democratic consultant, Peter Fenn, told the magazine the party "could lose two or three Senate seats and low digits in the House."
