Stars converge on political Hub

BOSTON — With the fate of health care reform potentially hanging in the balance, the two candidates vying to fill the seat of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy brought in a pair of prominent allies Friday to underline what’s at stake in Tuesday’s special election.

Former President Bill Clinton rallied voters for state Attorney General Martha Coakley, a Democrat, while former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani stumped with state Sen. Scott Brown, the Republican in the suddenly epochal battle here over the Democrats 60-seat Senate majority.

Few would have expected when the election began to see such political star-power four days before voters head to the polls, since few thought a Republican could capture the seat held by Kennedy for 47 years, in a state where the GOP makes up less than 12 percent of the electorate.

I understand why Bill is supporting Martha, given her commitment to Hillary. We have analyzed her candidacy and our conflict about wanting to see a female, Hillary supporter elected, while understanding the potential impact her election will have on the very far from acceptable health care reform.

I admire Bill for supporting Coakley the way she supported Hillary. However - and I know this if very superficial and shallow - it does appear that Martha may lose, regardless of who supports her, primarily, because of the health care issue. I just hate to see Bill go all out for a candidate whose candidacy is difficult for many Dems to support. It just gives fodder to the reporters with CDS, who will spin Coakley's loss (if she loses) as further proof that the Clintons no longer have any clout. I know it would be very selfish for him to refuse to campaign for Martha because she may lose. But, I think the reason for the reluctance of Dems to support her - health care reform - is a valid one. If she loses, that will be the reason. Yet, Bill and more importantly, Hillary, may be perceived as having declined in power and popularity among Dems. If MSM can find a way to spin it as such, they will.
