Why A Vote For Scott Brown Is A Vote Against LGBTQ Rights

by David Badash on January 19, 2010

Scott Brown’s Positions On DOMA, DADT, ENDA, And More

scott-brown.jpg

Scott Brown, the Massachusetts Republican state senator running against Democrat Martha Coakley, Massachusetts’ Attorney General, is vehemently against LGBTQ rights.

Now, I’m sure he had a great reason for posing nude for Cosmo. Heck, he was in great shape! But he has no excuse — aside from being a bigot — for opposing equality.

Here’s Brown’s record on gay civil rights:

Brown, in 2004, voted to define marriage as only between one man and one woman. He also voted against same-sex domestic partnership benefits.

Brown has said “the idea of two women having a child is “just not normal.”

Brown has recently benefited from the National Organization for Marriage’s “$50,000 investment,” and from robocalls made for Brown by NOM.

Brown, also recently, received endorsements by two hate groups, and has not renounced their support.

Worst still, we have this via Hearst’s Connecticut News:

Arline Isaacson, Co-Chair of Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus stated, “Scott Brown has voted consistently against the LGBT community throughout his entire career in the Massachusetts legislature. His has not been an incidental opposition. He has voted against us loudly, proudly and unequivocally.

Unfortunately, most people don’t realize just how bad his record is:

-He voted over 25 times against marriage equality, even when 3/4 of our legislature and many MA Republican legislators stood with us.
- He doesn’t support the Transgender Civil Rights & Hate Crimes bill
- He opposes repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”
- He opposes repealing the “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA)
- He has ridiculed LGBT parents as inadequate
- He supported anti-gay policies of George W Bush & Mitt Romney

But wait, there’s more!

We have confirmation of Brown’s stance on ENDA, DOMA, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and more! Thank you, Massachusetts Family Institute for creating this chart (via KnowThyNeighbor.org.)

=====================================

Good summary on the subject.

Unlike the title, in reading the details, I find that his position is moderate.

He is in favor of civil union but not in favor of gay marriage.

I do not know of his voting record on matters such as civil rights and right to benefits.. things that have come to be accepted as norm.

VH, I am going to take a closer look at his voting record. The double negatives in these sentences are a bit hard to digest especially when some of these sentences are so convoluted.

Please share anything you find as well. Let's develop a fuller profile of the person. Thanks.

Reading that looks like the food labels I've having to digest, which is real and which is just water weight, especially when the box says 97% fat free.....

Mercy Me.

His record sucks as far as LGBT issues, but then again...so does Obama.  I refuse to be party-loyal to the Dems anymore when it comes to gay issues.

We are their "meal-ticket" fund raising-wise, just as pro-choice is the "meal-ticket" for the Repubs.

Neither party is going to do ANYTHING that would take away their money issues.

VH, This is so true. Sad but very true.  Unfortunately, pro-choice is the "meal ticket" also on the Dems side. BOTH sides are happy to keep women in the subservient role; it keeps their platform plank to walk on, to dance on and use the microphone on.

There are very few politicos who do the correct thing by women anymore. When I see one, I go miles to help them do whatever they are set out to do in real life.

To me, the LGBT rights and gender equality rights are coming from the same place. It is the struggle to be treated as human and as an ordinary human being with feelings and aspirations, to be allowed to rise to our fullest potential and live our lives fully.  And, that is something that Hillary recognized. She taught me to accept and grow in this matter like no one else could before her.   There are so very few like her.

This is why I have to take a very close look at candidates and what they say/do to truly gauge where they stand on the subject.  CONGRUENCY between words and action is really huge in this regard.  In the case of Obama, I was disappointed, and in the case of Hillary, I saw more inclusion in her actions than even the words conveyed.

LOL, yep!

Sometimes words are very challenging to me, esp because of language conversion. I have to sometimes write it down like logic statements in philosophy class. Even then, I cannot decipher the triple negatives... Then I print, highlight and ask my hubby! LOL.  Then we debate it. LOL.  A lot of fun!  Advice: NEVER ask your hubby / best friend to interpret logical statements - you can be stuck in the dialog for the whole evening!
