One stat cited all over the place to reinforce just how daunting it is for Republicans to win in true blue Massachusetts is the 62% of the vote that President Obama captured just over a year ago. But, overlooked in this hand wringing is the fact that even as Obama's campaign for the nomination was building up steam, Massachusetts Democrats chose Hillary Rodham Clinton, instead, and by a very comfortable 56%-41% margin. And Hillary, as we all know well, could have "stayed home and baked cookies and had teas" but "decided to...fulfill (her) profession," instead. So reports of Obama fervor may be in fact a bit exaggerated.
Now, if we do ponder the possibility that Brown voters just can't abide by woman in a position that powerful, then consider comparing the maps from 2010's Senate Special and 2008's Democratic presidential primary. OK, it is a rough comparison, sure, but notice the overlap in towns won by both Brown and HRC. A few genteel, historically Republican Yankee towns on the North Shore and in the Merrimack Valley seem to have backed Brown and Obama, keeping with the trend in other states. And, some Obama voting towns in Western Mass., notably most of Franklin County, stood by Coakley, a native of that region.
Something to chew on as we get a hold of more data.
