The spending freeze Obama is going to propose in his State of the Union message as a response to the Democrats loss in Massachusetts, is not about freezing government spending, its about Obama freezing.
It's Obama doing what he has always done throughout his political career -- capitulate in whatever direction he thinks the prevailing winds are blowing. The problem is he is not as politically savvy as he and some people think he is.
Knee jerk reactions, reversals on promises and changing policy statements on a dime during a campaign is fine as long as you have the press in your pocket as he did during the primaries. But now, when what you say actually affects more than people voting for [you], its not going to work. And so far his proposed budget freeze on discretionary spending has met with an icy response. (Emphasis added)
For Republicans its not enough and for Democrats its not only too much, it represents a cheap political reaction ore over reaction to what happened in Massachusetts which so far every journalist and politician seems to have read wrong.
Obama, who lost a good deal of prestige campaigning for Coakely only to see her lose anyway, was clearly feeling the heat and his reaction was to freeze. He did it repeatedly during the healthcare debate, dropping the public option when the town hall crazies who represented maybe 25-30% of the electorate made the most noise. In fact if one looks at the entire healthcare debate and how Obama has handled it, its not exactly Profiles in Courage. (Emphasis added)

Kathy Kattenburg a blogger for "The Moderate Voice" wrote a post titled, Herbert Hoover Returns to the White House, about the proposed spending freeze and asked, "Why is he planning to announce a Republican-style spending freeze in a deep recession? Does he truly imagine Republicans in Congress will support his initiatives now? Why isn't he solving problems and helping people instead of running scared from his own oft-stated beliefs?"
It is a very astute observation. What was "cool" before is not working in the executive office. For Pres.Obama, his best strength as a campaigner has emerged to be his worst weakness as the President.
