Hillary Clinton Not Seeking Second Sec. of State Term: Is Private Life Next? (PoliticsDaily 1/28/10)

http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/01/28/hillary-clinton-not-seeking-second-secretary-of-state-term-is-p/

The admission in itself is not unusual - rarely do secretaries of state stay for a full eight years, and many have not served one full term. However, simply because of who she is, Hillary Clinton's every career move is watched with great interest (and perhaps some skepticism), particularly by those who believe she may still run for president. Her absence at the State of the Union speech Wednesday night generated buzz even though she was at an important security conference in London and had spoken directly with President Obama about her attendance beforehand.

It's hard for many politicos to imagine Hillary Clinton being content with "going back to private life and spending time reading, and writing, and maybe teaching, doing some personal travel," as she told Smiley. Though she lost the 2008 campaign, Time Magazine annointed her the "symbol of a movement that has come to represent the hopes and frustrations of millions of working-class Democrats." Should Democrats' discontent with the policies of the Obama administration increase, so may the speculation about her chances in 2012.

Politically speaking, Clinton's acceptance of Obama's invitation to become Secretary of State was a brilliant move. Without stepping out of political life, Clinton has avoided a Congress where lawmakers have been forced to cast stigmatizing votes on health care, cap-and-trade, bailouts and stimulus bills. Whatever the results of the increasingly uncertain 2010 campaign season, she will likely walk away unscathed.

Did these factors play a part in her acceptance, and will her departure reveal further political ambitions? Might we see 'Clinton 2012: I Told You So' signs in the Democratic primary? No matter how many quotes there are to the contrary, the speculation may prove too tempting to resist. In the meantime, the Secretary of State seems focused on three more years of hard, important work.

Sounds pretty accurate to me.

She's not seeking a second term because she is planning her next move and she will need a couple years right now looking at 2016 and planning on getting elected.

Moreover, she is becoming the unquestionable global leader in the meanwhile.

The article is an excellent summary.  I would really like to see her run for 2012 or 2016.. 2016 is more realistic IMHO.

If The Fraud is the Dem Nom in 2012 (hopefully, he'll have the sense to cut his losses, and not seek re-election), there is a very good chance that we'll have a Pub POTUS in 2012. Regardless of who is in the WH, I feel sorry for the person who becomes SOS after Hillary's term ends. She's a hard act to follow.

He's not running and the POTUS in 2012 is the only person who can keep the White House blue the person who warned the world about BO---Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton.

Think of the party we will have on this forum the night she is finally elected.

HMG, I soooooo hope you're right about 0 not running in 2012. The way he is behaving now, he is clearly in campaign mode. But at this point in 1966, would anyone have expected Johnson to bow out?

Good point, Jen.  And if progressive Dems continue to lose, the party leadership may move back to a more centrist approach.

No Johnson had just passed the civil rights act and the voters right act.  Obama hasn't done anything remotely as important as that.  I just don't think Obama gets it enough to listen to the voters.

I saw the pictures of her when she landed in Afghanistan. This lady is tired, and it hurt my heart to see her this way.

Are we expecting so much from her?

No I believe she never stopped wanting to be President.  She is more then likely showing signs of exaustation because she is a workaholic.  I love her.  I think she loves the talk of her running again.  Its proving that people love her.  The media has always claimed that no one loves Hillary and now they know better.

Damn straight about people loving Hill, HMG. If there's ever been a movement such as PUMA and the PUMA type efforts inspired by a nominee, and still going strong more than a year and a half after she suspended her campaign, I'm surely not aware of it. I think it's downright phenomenal that after all this time, we're all still as dedicated as we were from day one of her campaign.

Do you know that if it wasn't for Hillary Clinton I would be dead or in prison?  I was activitally involved with a Street gang from the time I was 11 until the age of 27 when a certain woman's husband ran for President.  First I liked her grit she was a tough cookie and I wanted her to run for President herself.   She inspired me to quit banging and quit selling drugs and to live a clean life.  I will never forget that.  That is why Hillary is my girl.  She saved my life.
It would make me insane that she would be bashed by everyone.  I mean the things they did to her would just make me so angry.
To witness the Democrats doing the same thing to her and the media bashing her in 2008 left me with so much anger that I want to make sure it never happens again.

Someone asked me a few days ago if I were ever torn between Hillary and Obama and I answered truthfully "I had a choice between a black man I didn't know nor like versus my Shero and the woman responsible for saving my life.  I was never torn.

I still think "the one" ran in 2008 I just think she was robbed from the nomination.

What an amazing, touching story hmg.  Have your ever told Hillary?  I know she would be humbled and find it so gratifying that she impacted your life in such a positive way.

No I never told her.  I would love to tell her that but didn't when I had the chance.  I would like to write about it someday.  I would love for her to know that.  She is the greatest IMO and my shero.

Wow! I am thankful that Hillary has had such a profound impact on your life because your activism and dedication have had a profound impact on the lives of so many PUMAs, myself included. I strongly encourage you to write down your story and share it with Hillary when the time is right. I'm sure she will be deeply moved.

What a great story.  I am glad she had that positive impact on you!  I was a young 18 year old kid in 93.  Bill Clinton was the first president I ever cast a ballot for and I did it because I thought he was smart and his wife didn't take no stuff and I had a feeling that with her beign the first lady maybe women would start getting their voices heard.  I am glad I was right.

I often wonder where would I be if it weren't for Hillary.  I more then likely would have either been killed or doing a bid in prison and since I was selling crack it would have been a life sentence.
