Brian Krolicki's run against Harry Reid now in doubt

Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki was once regarded as a top 2010 GOP contender, a prominent pol who has won statewide office three times and who was prepared to mount a serious challenge to powerful Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

But more than a year after announcing that he was forming an exploratory committee to run for the Senate, Krolicki faces a far less favorable political outlook — and the prospects of his waging a bid are by no means certain.

Krolicki saw his political brand tarnished in late 2008, after Nevada’s Democratic attorney general, Catherine Cortez Masto, indicted the lieutenant governor on charges stemming from his handling of a state-run college savings program during his tenure as state treasurer — forcing Krolicki to suspend his incipient campaign.

A judge dismissed the charges last month, but Nevada insiders say the taint remains.

“It’s not the same race it would have been if he didn’t have his legal problems,” said Brad Coker, managing partner of the Mason-Dixon poll. “His reputation has been harmed. It’s just a question of how much it’s been harmed.”

In an interview with POLITICO last week, one month after the charges against him were thrown out, Krolicki confirmed that he was considering re-entering the race against Reid, saying, “I’m absolutely serious about this.” (Emphasis added)

But Krolicki acknowledged that opponents would try to make hay out of his indictment — and said thatwas factoring into his decision. Nevada’s primary is June 8.

“You could reprosecute this case in a political context,” said Krolicki, who has called the charges a political witch hunt brought against him by Reid allies. “This is something that I think one person, or perhaps more than one person, will try to turn into political ammunition.”

Nevada political analyst Jon Ralston said Krolicki would use the indictment to rally the Republican faithful but that political foes would inevitably use the charges against him.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” said Ralston. “People remember for a time that his middle name was ‘Indicted.’”

“The Republicans run a risk in nominating him,” said Coker. “People might turn away from him because, after he [won] the primary, Harry Reid would have a card with which to nuke him.”

Krolicki’s interest in the race comes as polls show Reid’s support in the state at anemic levels, with just 33 percent of Nevada voters expressing a favorable view of Reid in a January Mason-Dixon survey. The poll also showed Reid trailing three already-announced GOP challengers: former Nevada GOP Chairwoman Sue Lowden, former University of Nevada basketball player Danny Tarkanian and former state Assemblywoman Sharron Angle.

Ralston said one of the main challenges facing Krolicki was the prospect of entering a crowded field of primary opponents who have spent months on the campaign trail. “You jump into a pool with 12 people, and I don’t think he immediately makes a dent,” said Ralston. “He jumps in, he makes a splash. But how big a splash will it be?”

Harry Reid's campaign ad (left) was not very impactful against the backdrop of an already raging ad campaign that was started earlier in the year last year by GOP (Right)

"Nevada Jobs" - October 2009 [Harry Reid's campaign ad] -- "Trillion" - January 2009 [Republican ad against Harry Reid]
