Last night offered a glimpse of the toughness and tirelessness of Hillary Clinton. She was in Buenos Aires, where she came in a gesture of friendliness, so she could confer with President Cristina Fernández on the Argentinian’s home turf. But gestures of goodwill aren’t the same as being a pushover and after Fernandez added to what had been a long day for Clinton by talking for three hours, the secretary of state wasn’t willing to give any ground. The Argentinians had various things on their talking points list, including criticism of the US for what many Latin American countries say was insufficient resistance to a Honduran coup last year, a push for greater support for Buenos Aires dispute with the UK over the Falkland islands and the desire for a meeting between Ms Fernández and Barack Obama when the US President hosts a nuclear non-proliferation summit in Washington next month.
Mrs Clinton wasn’t having any of it - or not much of it.
On Honduras, she made sure to have the last word, smartly calling for the region to “turn the page” on the coup and work with the country’s new government then pivoting to the importance of our Argentina and the US “remaining in close touch and constant consultation”, which didn’t allow Fernández to make a come back.
On the Falklands, she repeated a general willingness to encourage the UK and Argentina to talk about their differences but resisted all pressure to commit the US to a substantive mediation role.
And on a possible Fernández-Obama meeting, Mrs Clinton limited herself to a caustic “there will be an opportunity to discuss future meetings”, which promised precisely nothing.
On that topic, however, Ms Fernández, who is married to the former Argentinian president, had the best line: “I only hold special appointments with my husband.”
Jen, Thanks for a great article. I read several others on Hillary Clinton's visit to Argentia and her meeting with Ms Fernández (famously touted as a "reunion") and their joint press conference - all coverage has been quite positive.
The above article is giving great insight to how SoS Clinton can be both friendly as well guarded at the same time. She is a phenomenal diplomat.
How did the media mess up 2008 so much, I can never ken. I hope some of them go and knock their head on their doors for the damage they have done to the US.
