US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was honoured last night at the American Ireland Fund 18th Annual National Gala in Washington D.C. The Fund present the 2010 Leadership Award to Secretary Clinton for what it called "her tireless and long-standing support for the peace process in Northern Ireland."
Secretary Clinton’s involvement in the search for peace in Northern Ireland began with the instigation of the process and efforts to establish a political accommodation between the two traditions, a statement from the fund noted. Secretary Clinton has maintained her commitment to Northern Ireland ever since and visited Belfast last September with newly appointed US Economic Envoy to Northern Ireland, Declan Kelly, and a group of leading US business figures.
An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen delivered the keynote address at the National Gala.
