Hillary Clinton worn out (Politico 4/22/10)

Hillary Clinton says in a new profile that the constant travel and demands of being secretary of state are beginning to take a toll.

"It wears you out," Clinton told Esquire in a story for the May issue of the magazine. "The jet lag, the dry air on planes, the whole 'If it's Tuesday, I must be in...' kind of thing."

Clinton has said before that she only intends to serve one term as secretary of state, citing the travel, and told the magazine that she hopes she has enough gas in the tank to keep up the pace.

"Knock on wood," she said. "I do have good stamina and resilience. But you would think, in the world in which we live today, that with instantaneous communications, that you wouldn't need to travel as much."

"But, in fact," Clinton explained, "you almost have to travel more, both because everybody knows you can get on an airplane and get to where they're expecting you, but also because it's almost as if the virtual reality cries out for the real relationships need to be affirmed."

"It's ironic," she said.

Now, there's a profound thought, if I ever heard one.  Only Hillary would have the analytical and verbal skills to be able to identify that dynamic and put it into words so clearly.  Wouldn't you love to have her for a college professor?!  I mean she's unusually smart - not just really smart (although she is) - she has intelligence + good intuition and insight.  I don't think it's all that common to encounter an individual who possesses genuine, innate  intelligence as well as high levels of emotional intelligence, empathy, compassion, insight.  But Hillary has the total package.

I don't blame her for being worn out.  I can't imagine being able to carry the sheer work load plus the traveling plus the stress involved with high level negotiations and diplomacy.  My hat's off to her.  I'm glad she's getting out of the job.  As HMG mentioned on another thread - the Israel issue is going to cause some really strong reactions.  In fact, it already has.  I noticed earlier on one of the DP blogs, that a big rally is in the works - to protest  Obama's latest demands of Israel.  No doubt, Hillary will feel some of the heat.

I understand, and I often wonder how she does it! I'll be happy to see her at the homefront, and maybe with a new grandbaby.

If Hillary does decide to resign as SOS and run in 2012, the Israel/Palestine issue might prove to be her tipping point. She has always been pro-Israel, although she doesn't agree with them 100 percent of the time. She cares about the basic human rights of all people, including the Palestinians, whereas Bibi Netanyahu doesn't give a rat's arse about what happens to them. And of course, Hillary's tough on terrorism, which means she's not going to put up with any bullsht from Hamas. So negotiations would be tough even if she were Prez and totally in charge of the whole works. I'm sure she will do her best to get both sides to at least sit at the same table, but anything beyond that will require superhuman intervention because these people HATE each other. If, on top of all this, Obama ruins everything by siding with Hamas and permanently alienating the Israelis... Uh, yeah, that could make Hillary throw up her hands and quit. And the American people are largely pro-Israel, so they'll take her side.

Anyhow, that's one possible scenario.

I agree with your scenario, Jen. It is worrisome, though, that there are folks in DC who will try to blame Hill for the current tensions. I posted a letter that jack-ass Reid sent her almost admonishing her about the recent distance between the U.S. and Israel, caused by Obama.

Of course that twit, Reid, lacked the testicular fortitude to sign a letter signed by 80 other Senators expressing concern about the position Obama is taking toward Israel. Reid DID NOT sign it. Rather he sent a curt little letter to the SOS. I can't wait to see him leaving town for the last time - as senator. Harry is goin' down, and no one deserves it more - although, pelosi deserves it as much.

On the day his successor is installed, we need to find and play that old country song "Thank God and Grey Hound He's Gone." lol

Chuck Schumer is also giving Hillary a hard time about Israel while protecting Obama. For more on this, check out the latest entry at Hillary is 44:

Chucki Schumer is a traitor and he infiltrated for Obama because he is a sexist pig who would have never become US Senator if it wasn't for Hillary.  We need to take both him and Gillibrand out because she is now with Schumer.  I don't trust neither of them.
