Members of the U.N.’s Security Council took part in a vote to determine whether new sanctions on Tehran would be imposed. By a 12-2 vote, the United Nations voted in favor of the new sanctions and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton responded to the results of the vote from Columbia, according to Reuters.
Clinton, who is visiting Columbia to address business-related matters, told a collection of reporters, “Our goal is not to sanction Iran. Our goal is to end any doubts and questions about the purpose of Iran’s nuclear program and to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and that is a goal that is widely embraced in the international community.”
The United Nations hopes that the newly imposed sanctions, which will establish new measures against banks and companies who are believed to be involved in Tehran’s nuclear program, will eventually encourage Tehran to engage in legitimate negotiations.
The Secretary of State stated that the sanctions will be able to interfere with Iran’s nuclear program by making it more difficult for them to acquire the weapons that they are seeking. However, Clinton emphasized that the United Nations hopes to Iran return to the negotiating table.
