A Clinton is once again trying to broker the elusive land-for-peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

Secretary of State Clinton will referee the first face-to-face negotiations in two years between the leaders of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, she said yesterday.

The meeting is set for Sept. 2 at the State Department.

The players have a year to reach a deal – or at least show they’re making progress.

“These negotiations should take place without preconditions and be characterized by good faith and a commitment to their success, which will bring a better future to all of the people of the region,” Clinton said.

“It is important that actions by all sides help to advance our effort, not hinder it. There have been difficulties in the past, there will be difficulties ahead.”

President Obama will host Mahmoud Abbas and Benjamin Netanyahu at a dinner the previous evening, Clinton said.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Jordan’s King Abdullah and ex-British Prime Minister Tony Blair, another key Mideast peace mediator, are also invited to dinner.

Hamas is not invited.

Obama will meet one-on-one with all the foreign leaders, but he’s assigned Clinton the ringmaster role in talks between Netanyahu and Abbas.

Clinton’s task is to try to do what her husband, ex-President Bill Clinton, fell short of accomplishing: A two-state solution with Israel and Palestine existing side-by-side.

Obama will be used as an ace card, brought to the table only when necessary.

Ace card? Sounds more like a joker to me. Hillary will do all the work and Obama will try to take all the credit if this peace deal goes through. If it fails, he'll let Hillary take the blame.

The key stakeholder leaders in these talks will meet with Hillary, then go to the WH for dinner with the POTUS, and then with her again at which point specifically she is going to re-launch the peace talks.  Hillary has very smartly prepared have to re-launch the peace talks on the day after their dinner with the POTUS.
