Hillary Clinton says deficit sends message of weakness

WASHINGTON | Wed Sep 8, 2010 1:33pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The huge U.S. budget deficit poses a national security threat and projects a "message of weakness" internationally, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday as she urged Democrats and Republicans to tackle the problem.

Clinton, in a speech heralding a new "American moment" in U.S. foreign policy, said the Obama administration's policy of greater engagement with the world has brought dividends such as a united front against Iran's nuclear ambitions.

But she again stressed the corrosive effect of the mounting U.S. debt, which she said threatened the United States' ability to chart its own course in the world and sends "a message of weakness internationally."

"It poses a national security threat in two ways: it undermines our capacity to act in our own interest, and it does constrain us where constraint may be undesirable," Clinton said in response to a question after her address to the Council on Foreign Relations think tank.

"So the challenge is how we get out of (it) by making the right decisions, not the wrong decisions," she said.

'NO FREE LUNCH'

Clinton, beaten by Obama for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, noted that in her current job she is "by law out of politics" and said the challenges ahead would need a bipartisan "detente" on key issues including a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia.

"Whether one is a Republican or a Democrat, a conservative, a progressive -- whatever you call yourself -- there is no free lunch and we cannot pretend that there is without doing grave harm to our country and to our future generations," she said.

That is one clear succinct message.  She is an excellent communicator and she knows how to communicate to all ends of the political spectrum.

This is the second time she has publicly commented on the deficit and the fact that it represents a threat to national security.

Would we have had such debt had Hillary not been cheated out of the rightfully won nomination? Hell no.

I wonder what the WH reaction to the speech was.

LOL... Yeah, I wonder what the WH reaction was... confuse LOL

No, I dont think the market would have tanked to quite the degree it did after SP's kid's pregnancy story came out and - the GOP convention completed without major lift to McP.
Market would have dipped more gradually... but would have recovered more rapidly, as her key focus was on economy especially the derivative market.

Hillary knew the economic issues inside out... as we saw when we interviewed with Mad Money on CNBC.  She would have lasered focused in on the Fannie and Freddie issues and curbed derivative trading immediately.

Derivative trading still remains largely unregulated, and that is going to be the bane of this economy.

Who can hedge, and how many levels of hedging is allowed may be a more fundamental question that the punditry have to sort out.  Ethics of that quetion is ...well... above my paygrade! LOL

typo fixed

Yes, this is the 2nd time she has gently backhanded Zero with her remarks. It's statements like these that give me hope that she is preparing to challenge Zero in '12.

Is Hillary Going For The Jugular
How very difficult it is for Monica Crowley to admit that Hillary is correct on the issue!  And how begrudging the statements!

One thing we agree on.. we all think she is running for 2012!  LOL :)  Yeah!
