Obama Rejects Hillary Clinton Mexico-Colombia Comparison (NPR 9/09/10)

A day after his secretary of state likened Mexico to Columbia in the bad old days of 20 years ago, a narco state struggling with an insurgency at the same time, President Barack Obama rejected the comparison.
Reuters reports that Obama made the comments to La Opinion, a Los Angeles-based Spanish language newspaper. According to the news service, a transcript of the interview was available only in Spanish from the White House. No English-language version was handy.

A Reuters excerpt:

"Mexico is vast and progressive democracy, with a growingeconomy, and as a result you cannot compare what is happeningin Mexico with what happened in Colombia 20 years ago," Obamatold Los Angeles-based Spanish language newspaper La Opinion.

Yeah, Mexico is in such great shape right now. That's why we don't have a problem with illegal immigration. Those people sneaking over the border are just prosperous, middle-class folks benefitting from Mexico's growing economy, so they want to take a nice vacation in the good old USA. Uh-huh...

The administration spent Thursday trying to clean up the Clinton's comments.

For instance, a State Department official who spoke to reporters on the condition that his name wouldn't be used, said Clinton was being misinterpreted, that she wasn't suggesting Mexico had a political insurgency like Colombia did.

But the comments by the president amounted to a major public correction of his one-time rival for the presidency.

Considering how rancid the campaign for the Democratic nomination between them was, the public relationship between the president and Clinton has seemed more tranquil than many observers would have predicted.

Still, the president's blunt public rejection of Clinton's framing of the Mexico crisis will no doubt have some observers wondering of there are growing strains between the president and the nation's chief diplomat.

Looks like the gloves are coming off on both sides. emote.img?ID=10538BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a POS. Hillary has been the only decent thing about this sorry administration. And, she has shown more guts and honesty than Obama could muster under any circumstances. The man's a gutless little shrew.

She's showing him up, and he can't take it. Plus, he seriously wants the Hispanic votes for the Dems in Nov. and for himself, should he make the unwise decision to run again in 2012.

There's absolutely nothing to respect about this man. He could not care less about this country and Americans.

yep!  This is Barack Drama Obama trying to energize his base that loved Hillary when she was forced to support Obama.

He forgets that she has been doing a phenomenal job. Not only are her ratings high.. the media has begun to see this is the smarter, more eloquent, in-touch leader that the DNP was stupid enough to forego.

Who knows the POTUS may be getting ready to explain away changes to his administration. Rahm may be leaving to fight for Mayor in Chicago... Christina Romer is leaving and Austan Goolsbee is replacing her as Chief Economic Advisor (Larry Summers remains as top economic advisor)... etc.  More changes may be coming.

I am just glad to see that there are differences and the season to put out the cards is nearing. :)

The man just cant take the positive press her speech has been getting.  That's ok when more mayors and police in mexico continue to get killed.  Obama will look silly.

And I don't see how it helps Obama with American voters of Mexican descent if he denies the reality of what's happening down there. Surely, a lot of these folks are worried about their friends and relatives.

Hillary is positioning herself to resign due to philosophical differences.

I tend to agree with this.  I think she is starting to get tired of "towing the line" at the cost of her own intelligence and good sense on matters.
