Senate Republicans, divided over whether to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor as the first Hispanic justice, aren't planning a drawn-out debate on her nomination.
GOP senators on the Judiciary Committee plan to block a panel vote scheduled for today, delaying the committee's action on President Barack Obama's first high court nominee until July 28. Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, the No. 2 Republican, said he thought the subsequent Senate debate on Sotomayor's confirmation could be completed in four days.
That's a standard timetable for recent Supreme Court nominees, and it underscores the GOP's intent to refrain from filibustering her - which risks alienating Hispanic voters, a fast-growing part of the electorate - given her lopsided chances of being confirmed.
Still, GOP conservatives are strongly opposed. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the fourth-ranking Republican, announced Monday he would vote no.
Earlier in the day, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the minority leader, whose office announced Friday he intended to oppose Sotomayor, said she has "a record to be scared of" - one that shows she lets bias interfere with her decisions. He said Obama's stated criterion for a justice - that the person have "empathy" - means that his Supreme Court choices aren't entitled to as much deference from the Senate as past nominees have been.
Good they are standing up for what they believe in. A lifetime position of power like the Supreme Court they should get beat up a bit. You have to be sure.
I am glad that there is atleast SOMEONE asking tough questions about this. Supreme court nominees make some pretty big decisions we need to make sure we have the right person for the job. And being in NY I am a little upset that Gillibrand wasn't asking any questions she was basically just giving her all praise. Well, supreme court justices don't need praise they need to be tested and vetted.
I wish there was a different process for choosing SCOTUS justices. Instead of interviewing one candidate at a time, why can't they interview four or five people and vote for the best one from among them?
Jen, what an interesting concept. Something definitely to discuss.
There are some great Justices out there in the States who are fair and just in application of the law; truly blind, equitable and balanced like Lady Justice herself portrays. I want to see more of them in the SCOTUS conference room..

The way they select the SCOTUS is very political. You have to be a good Democrat or a good Republican that's fine for the Congress but not the Supreme Court.
Nominating a SCOTUS is one of the fringe benefits of being a POTUS, used for political influence and reward.
