The ‘Hillary Platter’ and A Bit of Shopping

In the midst of television interviews, tours of agricultural areas, meetings, press Q&A’s and mini-speeches, Secretary Clinton was able to get in some shopping and get a food platter named after her at one of her favorite restaurants:

The Hillary Platter!

The Hillary Platter!

When Bill Clinton had visited India, the Clintons had visited Bukhara, leading to the creation of a special Bill Clinton platter which is now one of the most popular items on the menu list. On Sunday, Hillary arrived at Bukhara dressed in a turquoise jacket and black formal trousers.

According to Maurya sources, she reached the hotel around 8.30pm along with seven officials. She ordered murgh malai kabab, seekh kabab, paneer tikka, tandoori aloo, sikandari raan, dal bukhara, tandoori jinga, mixed raita, naan and ras malai (she later changed the dessert order to kulfi).

And shopping:

Villager for ever Thank you

Beautiful pictures

Just wish I could order up Hillary's Platter right here !

To start with, she ordered a variety of fresh fruit juices. This was followed by a lavish dinner of items chosen by her from a special menu prepared by the hotel’s senior executive chef Manisha Bhasin.

The delicacies that Clinton chose were paneer tikka, tandoori aloo, murgh malai kabab, sikandari raan, tandoori jhinga, seekh kabab, dal bukhara, mixed raita and naan followed by kulfi and rasmalai for dessert.

After the dinner, Clinton was asked to tick a few items from the special menu and sign it so that the list could then be named the “Hillary Platter”.

“She ticked all the 11 items on the special menu and said she liked them all,” a staff member told IANS.

Clinton, who came to the hotel around 8.30 p.m. Sunday, entered the Bukhara restaurant via a corridor that was cordoned off from the regular guests for security reasons.

But soon guests staying at the hotel got to know about her visit and came to the main lobby to get a glimpse of the leader. She was greeted by the hotel general manager D. Kavarana and was escorted to the restaurant that is famous as the Clinton family’s favourite.

Even as the crowd watched, US security officials fanned out to cordon her way and took her inside the registrant, tucked away next to the lobby.

Hotel staff said at the time other guests were also having dinner at the restaurant and no one was asked to vacate although hotel authorities had made separate arrangements for them.

“Clad in a turquoise blue quilted jacket with a black top and black trousers, Clinton came across as a very warm and friendly person,” said a staff member of the ITC Maurya.

So after she signed the menu card, the Clinton family’s platter were completed on the menu of the restaurant.

The three had visited India and stayed at the hotel in 2000, when Bill Clinton was president, and had dined at the Bukhara.

The “Presidential Platter”, costing Rs.4,700, comprises non-vegetarian food that Bill Clinton had ordered and the “Chelsea Platter”, priced at Rs.4,200, has vegetarian dishes that she had preferred.

The two sets of dishes continue to be served and are a hit with diners.

During her visit to Bukhara, Clinton was offered a colourful apron designed by veteran artist M.F. Husain.

“The apron is a souvenir of the Bukhara Restaurant and is offered to the signatories and celebrities that visit the restaurant,” the staff member said.

After spending an hour savouring the food, Clinton left the restaurant around 9.30 p.m.

Here is our Hillary Clinton Platter for the Villagers I could not resist the FOOD Thing

Picked up this bad habit from OPTIX >>>>

West View Restaurant

Renowned for its northwest frontier cuisine, Bukhara brings rustic flavours alive in a traditional clay oven. The open display kitchen allows you to watch as your meal is prepared, a most memorable visual treat. Bukhara was honoured to be named amongst the “Top 50 Restaurants in the World and the Finest Restaurant in Asia” by Restaurants magazine in 2006.

DumPukht carries on a 200-year old culinary legacy from the kitchens of the Nawabs of Awadh. Slowly cooked over a fire in sealed earthenware pots or deghs, the cuisine is recognized by the subtle use of spices and a delicate flavour.

Lobby

Lobby of the Maurya Sheraton New DelhiOver the years, I could afford more upscale - and expensive - restaurants, and I remember my first visit to the famous Bukhara at the Maurya Sheraton. Already a foodie, I had heard of this place - especially about how this was the favorite dining spot of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and many visiting heads of state. That dinner was a dream dinner for me, one that I carried in my memory for a long time.

Artwork at the Maurya Sheraton New DelhiTrying to figure out a place to have my lunch before checking out of the Taj, I was suddenly reminded of the Bukhara, right next door. I wondered if I would find the Bukhara as delightful as that first time. Let me tell you now, there is a reason this restaurant is rated the best in New Delhi by many. There menu remains the same with a few good kababs, exotic Indian breads and the world famous Dal Bukhara. But no one - no one! - makes them quite like the Bukhara does.

Lunch at the Bukhara New DelhiI ordered the Tandoori Pomfret, Bharvan Kulcha, and Dal Bukhara. The fish was simply amazing: large, with a moist, flaky interior covered with a crispier outside coating with the best tandoori masala ever. The Kulcha and the Dal were exceptional too; you can’t make them any better. Even the laccha onions they serve along with the food seemed perfect – sprinkled with a zesty chaat masala.

Tandoori Pomfret at Bukhara New DelhiI ended with a Phirnee dessert. The phirnee was good, flavored with saffron, but not as delightful as the rest of the meal was. They encourage you to eat with your bare hands at the Bukhara, and trust me, that’s the best way to enjoy a meal here.

Phirnee at Bukhara New DelhiBukhara’s décor of a North West Frontier tavern, chain iron curtains, seating made of logs tied with ropes, etc., have now been copied in many restaurants. What remains unique is the large and distinct red-checkered apron they tie around your neck before you begin attacking your meat with your bare hands!

Bukhara New DelhiBukhara was one of ITC Hotels’ first attempt at branded upscale restaurants and was an instant success. While their other branded restaurants such as the Dum Pukht, Dakshin and the Peshawari have been replicated in their other hotels in Indian metros, there is only one Bukhara – in the Maurya Sheraton at New Delhi. A restaurant Bill Clinton never misses visiting when he’s in town. Bukhara is named after the Uzbek city located on the ancient Silk Route and famous as a center of art, religion and culture during the Persian empire. The invading hordes that came to India from this region brought mayhem and destruction, but also gave us our kababas and biryanis. Like they say, every cloud has a silver lining!

Yes Villager4ever!  She is much loved and respected in India and by many Americans of India origin.

What is most impressive to me in this trip's pictures is how she has blended with the ordinary people of India. This has received massive amount of coverage in India... but her objective was not photo opportunity. True to herself, her objective was learning.

I love seeing her go to street-side shops and browse.. She (and Bill) did that in Central New York in the New York Fair Grounds.  They simply blend in.. and others love and respect them and give them space all at the same time.
