I'm posting this, not to say one puma is right, and another, wrong, but to call attention to the problems within PUMA - problems that must either be resolved or ignored.  This movement is too important, and has meant too much to us to see it self-destruct because of in-fighting and disagreements.  We said back at HV that there was a need for a more structured, organized puma movement.  Some of us advocated for a large PUMA umbrella, under which several different action groups operated - or maybe several specific goals, around which different groups and people were organized, maybe with representatives from each major group being elected to form a kind of executive committee which met face to face to discuss action.

There needs to be some face time.  We need cohesion.  A Puma convention somewhere other than NYC (so more people could attend) would be wonderful.  We're invested in this movement - with tears, money, and time.  We need to find a way to keep this movement strong.

We don't have to agree on everything, as we've said.  Hell, we don't even have to like each other.  But we damn well better be able to find a way to work together against the sexism and corruption that we witnessed in 2008, or we can just get ready to let the good old boys, the entrenched political power brokers tell us who the hell we'll be able to support in 2012.  I, for one, would rather give up my right to vote than the have someone fraudulently select the person for whom I'm expected to vote.

Hanging On

by MURPHY on SEPTEMBER 21, 2009

"SUCCESS SEEMS LARGELY TO BE A MATTER OF HANGING ON AFTER OTHERS HAVE LET GO.

It’s not easy being a Puma this month. This is like Mile 9 in a marathon — we’ve come a LOOONG way but there is still so far to go; we’re not halfway there yet; and the possibility we might not make it to the finish line is very real.

Riverdaughter has gone from listening to econ podcasts to watching pretty girls expertly apply makeup to help her get to sleep at night. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I hate the feeling of makeup on my skin, but living with a skilled painter who learned how to transform her face with a makeup brush when she was all of four years old, I understand how fun and even subversive it can be to temporarily change your face.

Also, I totally understand her need to disengage somewhat, whether temporarily or not. I love to read her posts, so I hope she doesn’t go into permanent hibernation with her headphones and her mascara wand.

Speaking of writers I love to read, Uppity reminds us that today is Rapture Day! Have a great time, wherever it is you’re going you crazy cats who are going to disappear into thin air today, leaving us behind to fight the monstrous beasts with our bloodied bare hands. Also, Egalia at TGW gives us a sneak peek at Joan Allen playing Georgia O’Keefe.

Joe Cannon points out the hypocrisy of most of the liberal establishment with regard to their support of obama’s health insurance mandates:

“Of course, during the primaries, the Obots demonized Hillary when she suggested mandates, even though she had no enforcement mechanism. (The currently-discussed plans do.) From the Medical News of February, 2008:

The Obama campaign last week distributed a mailer that said, “Hillary’s health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can’t afford it … and you pay a penalty if you don’t” (New York Times, 2/4).

Why, that’s…that’s...awful!

Just for fun, let’s sample the kinds of things progs were saying back then. Here are some HuffPo commenters in April of 2008:”

Now only if Clinton can start pull magic rabbit out of her huge rump and win the nod. Then she can start criminalizing the working poor maybe have Halliburton build forced labor camps to help Clinton’s corporate over lords.

Humph. Speaking of B.S., looks like some people are finding out that when you alienate everyone in your lifeboat you’ll soon find yourself all alone, up ****’s creek without a paddle. Or something like that. Anyways, you’ll soon realize that unity is waay better than divisiveness.

Quick! Everybody stamp your foot and stick your tongue out at everybody else and scream, “I’m right and  you’re wrong!!” There, now that we’ve got that out of our systems, don’t you just feel a whole lot better?"

We need to refocus and regroup.  PUMA is desperately needed not only for Democrats but Republicans who are sick of the right wingers in their party.  PUMA needs to just regroup.

Action Plan:

1. Develop :

Mission Statement/Plan
Objectives
Who we are
What we want

2. Identify major players- such as Riverdaughter, Proud Military Mom...

3. Identify our allies/partners (PUMA or non-PUMA)

4. Establish a communication network so we can communicate with our allies.

Need to have contact info such as email and contact names at various blogs/forums

5. After some of the above has been done, then we can schedule a conference call. But someone suggested it would be best if we pounce around ideas at this forum before inviviting others.

******************************

Do we want this information in the open?

Who are PUMA?

We are Democrats, Republicans, Independents
We are Americans
We are Patriots
Who place Country before Party

We are true grass roots- no astroturf to be found
We are moderates- both liberal moderates and conservative moderates

What do we want?

Fair elections
Combat sexism & media bias
Politicians to be public servants and listen to the public

Communication network
1. email list of puma forums/blogs

2. email list of allies- such as some of the Palin groups

3. We need a way to master the internet like the opposition in the primaries- get a system in place to efficiently Digg and Twitter

4. I will pull out my master spreadsheet of email and phone numbers for radio, tv and news media.

5. Need a way to get important action item information to other forums/blogs in an efficient manner

Just some random thoughts:

I agree, if PUMA is to become viable again, it will need to reorganize.  New life is needed for it.  Whether it will be successful or not, I don't know at this point . . ., but the potential is there, if done correctly.

A mission statement needs to be developed.  And, it should be short and to the point (i.e., three bullet points . . . anything more gets lost in the translation, so to speak).

Core leadership members need to be identified.  Someone(s) need(s) to be the "face" of PUMA and be available to do what is necessary to promote PUMA.

"Brainstorming" sessions need to take place among the initial core group.  This could be done via a chat room, forum, or conference call.  It is difficult to get everyone together at the same time, so I would recommend doing it via a forum setting, such as this one, or in a chat room setting.

It will take work and dedication.

Just read Lynne's posts . . . this is the right track to get on . . .

Lynne, it sounds like you have been a Project Manager too.  smile

If we place Country before Party, which I wholeheartedly agree with, we need to place the Constitution before Obama and say (please see signature below).  No wonder Riverdaughter is watching people apply make-up.  As long as we're not addressing the main problem - that Congress and the Supreme Court installed a non-eligible person into the White House - then there will be NO peace - too many patriotic people aren't going to let this slide!

It's like raving about the furniture arrangement while the house is on fire.no

We've have some roughest of times, during the election, and now. I think we are the toughest of all, we stay in the fight against sexism. I don't care how you do it, cause I will not be looking down upon you, but will walk in sisterhood with you!

Totally Agree with this, Calico, and with Lynne's comments.  I think, however, that Lynne hit on an issue we're going to deal with - the Palin issue.  Most of us here have said we like Palin, and would have no problem joining forces with her supporters.  But, some of the folks who are out-spoken, long term Pumas have expressed that they have difficulty with this - Riverdaughter, I believe is one of these.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a non-issue.  In fact, there are many non-issues that divide us, imo.

To me, the questions are - are any of these divisive issues deal breakers? Is there a way that those who have been leaders in PUMA can reconcile their differences and join forces again?  Does it matter whether they can and do?

As a way to at least begin a dialogue about this, possibly, we could develop a letter noting our concerns about Puma, our hopes for strengthening the movement, some of the suggestions we have about establishing goals, mission statement, etc, and send it to people who identify themselves with Puma.  It shouldn't be too hard to compile a list to work from.

Just one suggestion.

Palin is part of the whole left wing vs right wing problem that is popping up all over facebook.  Palin and Health Care seem to be the biggies in that area.

It seems to be that some PUMA are having differences of opinion that is leading to fighting among the different groups.
Sarah Palin and Health Care Debates seem to be what is causing the problems.  Some on the left feel that PUMA is taking to much of a right wing attitude.
The Right Wing of the party is feeling like they are being insulted because the Liberals think ALL of us should agree with Government run health care and back any plan that comes out of this Administration regarding Universal Health care.
The Conservatives think the plan is to much and its expensive. Conservatives also think the bill has to much government control.
The forums seem to not have been affected but its all over facebook and other social networking sites.

I see a lot of good ideas here. I can think of one more: Not only does the PUMA movement need visible leaders to serve as the "face" of the movement, those leaders absolutely must be MEDIA TRAINED. There was no time for this last year, but we have time now. Any PUMA who agrees to be interviewed by either the print or televised media is entering a hostile environment. She can expect to be interrupted, side-tracked, race baited, ridiculed, taken out of context, etc. Whoever this person is, she needs to know how to deal with this while still getting her point across.

Yes and one way to avoid the race baiting must be having one of those faces at least be African American.  People have to see this as beyond race.
We do need to train people.
We also had a little bit of problems last year with some people who were sort of Prima Donas.  They need to cut that out.  Whomever is going to be the face of PUMA has to be willing to put ego aside for the good of PUMA.

I totally agree with both comments.  Hmg, you are so right about having an AA as the face of the movement, and I think you would be an excellent candidate for this job.
