Council split complicates Obama's Afghan decision (Yahoo News 10/1/09)

Thanks for posting this, Jen. I had wondered where Hillary really stood on this issue. Not surprising that there's some disagreement on this. I'm no fan of war. But it seemed to me all along that if we were going to be fighting in Afghanistan in the first place, the focus should have been on that country - not Iraq. All this time, and so little progress.

Yeah, I'm not a hawk either. But IMO, if you're going to get into a war, then go all out and win the damn thing by any means necessary. Basically, do it the way we did it in WW2, not the way we didn't do it in Vietnam. Unfortunately, Iraq and Afghanistan are more like the latter-- we've been putzing around in those countries for far too long. If we can't win or don't want to win, then we should pack up and go home now.

I'm no war monger, but my opinion is if the troops leave.. Dr. Condi Rice is 100% correct, another 9/11 will be hatched and planned in that region.

So to the Coward-in-Chief, either give the commanders on the groud the support they need (which I support) OR GET OUT!

DO NOT PUT AMERICAN TROOPS LIVES IN JEAPORDY! Either go for the long haul or pull them all out... none of this middle ground!

And Bless our troops.... not only do they have to deal with Talibans, they have an America-loathing-scumbag-in-chief who sympathezies with America's enemies

McChrystal declared that the U.S. would fail to meet its objective of causing irreparable damage to Taliban militants and their al-Qaida allies if the administration did not significantly increase American forces.

How the hell are you going to cause irreparable damage? Jihadists are just going to keep recruiting forever. Are we going to be at war in Afghanistan forever? This is the military industrial complex's way of just making more money off the backs of the American people, not to mention innocents in Afghanistan that are killed and maimed all too often.

I'm not an expert, but I think there are better ways to do this.

No comment on adding more troops, but what is BO's exit strategy for Iraq and Afghanistan? Has he been discussing that with his generals? If McCrystal thinks we should add more troops now to stabilize the region so that the U.S. can leave within a set period of time, then that makes sense (for those of us who want the wars to end).

Although I disagreed with the invasion of Iraq and Bush will always be known as the person who started that whole mess, these wars are BO's responsibility now. He needs to make a decision on the troops issue soon. And he won't be able to get away from being the decider on that. Being president of the U.S. isn't just about T.V. appearances and trips to Europe. It's time to grow up.

I think he's going to try to put this off as long he can, but when push coves to shove, he'll go with Rhambo and decline the surge offer. The far left does NOT support this war, but Obama supports them.

This is why I voted for McCain. Obama doesn't know squat about the military or war.

He needs to listen to the generals there. He is trying to straddle the fence so as not to anger, anybody, and he cannot do that.

I want our military home, but at this point, I see no way out. As long as we are there we have the taliban hiding and on the run.

I trust Hillary to do the right thing, but obama has no clue and all he cares about is being worshiped. He makes me sick.

He has to listen to those there who know how to fight - the military. What does he know about it? nothing.

And let's not forget that Obama chose to run for POTUS knowing full well that the US was engaged in two wars at the same time. He wanted this, so now he's got it and he has to deal with it.
