I write all this to preface my contention that Newt Gingrich, who should be a contender for president in 2012, has now disqualified himself. The former Speaker probably might have overcome the baggage of two failed marriages and an intense hatred by most in the mainstream media. Conservatives liked him and are still grateful for what he did for the movement. But Newt has fallen for the biggest lie in politics, and it is this: we must support Republicans simply because they are Republicans.
I refer, of course, to Newt's recent endorsement of New York State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava in the special election in the Empire State's 23rd Congressional District. Officially, Scozzafava is a Republican, although her political philosophy mirrors few of the GOP's platform tenets. She is locked in a three-way race for Congress with the Democrat, attorney Bill Owens, and the only conservative in the race, Doug Hoffman. The three are vying for the seat being vacated by Republican John McHugh, who has been appointed Secretary of the Army.
As columnist Michelle Malkin has pointed out, Scozzafava is "an ACORN-friendly, big labor-backing, tax-and-spend radical in GOP clothing." She favors same-sex marriage, unfettered abortion on demand, and has such an atrocious voting record on taxes in the state legislature that Owens, the Democrat, is attacking her as a "tax raiser"!
Naturally most true conservatives are lining up to support Hoffman, the nominee of New York's Conservative Party. Former Alaska Gov. Sara Palin, arguably our most reliable political compass at the moment, has enthusiastically endorsed him. The Club for Growth has blasted Gingrich for his endorsement of Scozzafava.
I am no expert on the Repubs' internal affairs, but it looks to me as if Newt thinks he's still living in the 1990s. Conservative no longer equals Republican and Republican no longer equals conservative. Ideology and party affiliation got divorced in 2008. I think we PUMAs (most of whom used to be Dems or at least vote Dem somewhat regularly) understand this split while Newt, apparently, does not. It makes me wonder if he even knows about the Tea Party movement?
Of course, I don't really want Newt to run for POTUS in 2012. A choice between him and That One is... yeeeeech, I don't even wanna think about that!
The republicans hate him because he went on every talk show and said that Hillary was going to be the next president of the united states.
I'm starting to think that the only people who can beat out 'the jerk' is Megan Fox or Zack Efron! We are up against this stupid, young generation who wants 'cool'. Imagine that the 18 yr olds who voted this fraud in office are only going to be 22 yrs old. And, the 18 yr olds in four years, were 14 yr olds when their older brother or sister chanted, "yes we can".
My friends who had children at these ages, all voted for this @ss, because they wanted to be 'cool' in front of their young adults.
Even scarier yet, the republicans can very well be behind getting this jerk elected for another 4 years. If they pick someone who the people have already said, "no", then we are going to have to push our own choice as an Independent. It's possible, because we still have the internet!

Good article, Jen. Initially, I thought that Newt's endorsement was intended to separate from Palin - since most of the Repub leadership have been anything but supportive of her. Newt seems to be particularly threatened by her. I can't see him winning anything in 2012. He's a divider and doesn't inspire trust. Plus, the scandal from the past would come back to haunt him. It apparently would not matter to voters that Obama had 200 skeletons in his closet, but Newt might not get such a pass.
I really dislike the man. Remember that "Contract with America"? He was the architect, and was successful in putting Repubs in the house and senate in 1994. He slammed the Clintons at every opportunity, even when Bill's mother died, on the day of the funeral, he was responsible for some pretty nasty news headlines about Bill. And, the whole time he was flipping out about Monica, in his holier than thou tone, he was having a damn affair. Such a hypocrite. I recall that one of the points on the "contract" was term limits for Sens and Reps. That lasted until time for terms of Republicans who signed the contract to expire - then, term limits were no longer a priority. It was all just a strategy - to get Repubs elected.
We have too many "strategists" now. It's nothing more than a game and a money machine for strategists in both parties. They play enough mind games with the public, thoroughly confuse the issues, lie and deny, and if they're good enough at the game --- yea, their candidate wins. He may be a sorry POS who is not competent and could not care less about America, but...hey, that's not what's important. It's all about "I win, you lose". To hell with what this country needs.
I hope we can ensure that no one who is not dedicated to this country and the people of America gets into office. A pipe dream? Sure it is. But, we no longer have time for politics as usual.
Sorry for the rant. I know that we all are aware that things suck right now, and that we have some folks who are all about the power game in office. I'm glad we're at least trying to do something. A whole lot of people in this country are indifferent or uninformed - or both.
