All the Secretary's Fans (New Republic 11/08/09)

The occasion: a “policy conference”—really more of a reunion—put on by a Hillary-centric advocacy group called NoLimits.org, which her staunchest defenders had founded in the wake of the 2008 election. They wanted to preserve the sisterhood that had grown up around her campaign, and the secretary, by being there, was just returning their loyalty. “We have had some extraordinary times,” Hillary said, relaxed and smiling. “There were so many of you here who were there with me on that long, exciting, death-defying journey across our country! You’re the ones who helped put all those cracks in the glass ceiling.”

The grand dame of this Clinton-themed confab was Ann Lewis, who has been deeply involved in Democratic politics since the 1980s and has spent most of her last 15 years working for the Clintons (both of them). After the plenary speeches, the wizened woman in a cyan blue jacket—who looks like the female version of her brother, Congressman Frank—relaxed with a glass of water.

“It became clear immediately after the election that Hillary would be going to State, that the kinds of networks and connections that she’d had, everything would be closed,” she said. “There’d be no HillPAC, there’d be no Friends of Hillary, it couldn’t be anything political. If people wanted to stay together, it could only be through a nonpolitical organization.” The inner circle got together and began thinking about a group built around a line from Clinton’s speech at the Denver convention: “With our ingenuity, innovative spirit, and creativity, there are no limits to what is possible in America.”

Lewis’s nascent organization—termed “Hillary in Exile” by Politico—began sending newsy issue e-mails after the inauguration, focusing especially on Hillary’s doings, which Lewis says people weren’t hearing about anywhere else. (That may also be a remnant of the feeling that mainstream news outlets had given candidate Hillary a rough time: “It’s good to have, let us say, information sources other than the media,” Lewis said with a sidelong glance.)

I can't figure out what exactly No Limits is all about. They're not PUMAs, because they stayed in the Democratic Party while we left. The founder of No Limits is the sister of Barney Frank. But at the same time, if these Dems are so gung ho on Obama, then why do they feel the need to stick together as Hillary supporters?

Anybody want to throw out some theories?

Jen, I do think they're party loyals , and I'm guessing tho they were die hard for Hill in the primary, they'll tow the party line regardless of who the party supports. Lady Lynn seems to be one who is not so constrained by party, however, and if I'm not mistaken, she's a member of no limits.

I understand that those who plan to continue in political life or are close associates of those who are in political life have to play by party rules, but I couldn't. After the Dem hatchet job on all of us loyal party members who supported Hillary - no way. It seems to me that sooner or later the party's going to have to come to grips with the damage party leaders inflicted on it. Until they get it, and make it right, the only Dem I would ever vote for again would be Hillary (or Bill).

BTW - there was a thread earlier in the week that mentioned No Limits. I think it was a copy of an email Lady Lynn sent to Hillary is 44. Someone posted it. The email mentioned the need to keep Hillary's name out of some of the protest movements because of her current position, and in the event of a future run, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm guessing that a bunch of the folks at No Limits have no more use for BO than we do - but they can't be public about their feelings. JMHO

I don't know if Lady Lynn is a member of No Limits or not. What happened was, the Admin at Hillary is 44 found out about the No Limits conference and wrote an article about why Obama loyalists were attending/speaking at a Hillary event, but Lady Lynn was not. Lady Lynn responded to the 44 article a few days ago, and so the Admin posted a new article that included the email she had sent them.

I suppose the No Limits Dems are the ones who will pick up the pieces and put the Party back together again after the obots have destroyed it.

Jen, You're right. I re-read that article. Sorry. All I know is this - Party people are not thinking of the Obama fiasco as we do. They must see it as - oh well, he won. We'll wait this out and not piss off the powers that be. The thing is - any Dem who doesn't separate himself from Obama and totally denounce his Un-American approach to government may be up sh** creek without a paddle come election time. The Republicans already have enough campaign material to last for decades. I can just see the ads now - 3 mins of talking without addressing the killings at Ft. Hood; Clips of the Apology Tour; His Muslim advisor defending sharia law - hundreds more screw-ups.

How much smarter it would be for the moderate wing and groups like No Limits to begin pulling away from O and cronies.

FreeSpirit, I don't even know if they would use them.  The Republicans could have made it impossible for Barry to win last year, but they rolled over and wouldn't push things like Reverend Wright, his ineligibility, his ties to the Chicago machine, etc.  Who's to say they won't do the same damn thing in the future?

And I'd also like to point out that some PUMAs may still be Dems.wink
