When no other Republican was willing to work with Democrats on legislation to revamp the health care system, Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine stuck it out.
Ms. Snowe was part of the bipartisan Group of Six on the Senate Finance Committee that worked for months to draft the health care bill. And even when the other two Republicans in the group, Michael B. Enzi of Wyoming and Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, dropped out, Ms. Snowe kept at it.
She put forward numerous amendments when the Finance Committee took up the bill – not aimed at killing the bill like so many other amendments proposed by her Republican colleagues – but to improve it, especially to make insurance more affordable for families and small businesses.
In recent weeks, Ms. Snowe has been the subject of intense efforts by the White House to win her vote. She had several one-on-one meetings personally with President Obama, including one on Saturday afternoon. But on Sunday the string finally ran out.
In a formal statement that in some ways only confirmed the obvious, Ms. Snowe said that she would vote against ending debate on the bill, and would oppose the legislation absent major changes.
“Having been fully immersed in this issue for this entire year and as the only Republican to vote for health reform in the Finance Committee, I deeply regret that I cannot support the pending Senate legislation as it currently stands, given my continued concerns with the measure and an artificial and arbitrary deadline of completing the bill before Christmas that is shortchanging the process on this monumental and trans-generational effort,” she said.
Unlike the barrage of attacks unleashed on the bill by her Republican colleagues, Ms. Snowe’s criticism is particularly devastating for the Democrats. In many ways, Ms. Snowe wants to vote for the health care bill even more than some of the reluctant centrists who will provide Democrats with the pivotal votes. Read more…

yes, ssmith, that would be accurate. Sen. Ben Nelson is a conservative Dem and he was the last of the 60-votes.
I am disappointed that a completely unilateral outcome will go through to change course on 1/6th of the nation's economy.
and Sanders, the most imporant point is that those 60 are essentially like diatators at this point.
60% of the American public doesn't want this and they prefer that NOTHING be done, and that % will go higher, b/c the left, right and center HATE THIS P*S RationCare Bill.
So by this week, over 70% of the American public hate this, 100% of the republicans vote against this, and they will be on the American Public's side. And people I have spoken to, are pissed beyond words at what is going on.
I really think these dims are in a bubble, they have NO clue just how pissed people are getting, and that anger is just growing by leaps and bounds.
I mean, I am planning on contributing good $$ to any conservatives that are running agn any of these marxists aka dims for next year. I have never done this before, but I am pissed beyond words, even more at this than I ever was agn the Iraq war vote
Good call on her part, no reason she should stick her neck out for this sham of a healthcare bill. Make the vote be party-line only, she owes nothing at all to Hari Kari Reid - same goes for the other Maine GOP senator.
I am glad that some women voted against this crappy bill. Boxer and Feinstein who are supposed to be so damn pro woman voted for this POS. I am disquested beyond means. I guess Boxer and Feinstein doesn't care if abortion becomes illegeal in red states but basically thats going to be the end result.
If a bunch of Hillary supporters such as ourselves don't want this bill, then that means there's something very, very wrong with it.
And I will not vote for anybody who votes for this bill. The Democrats have shown time and again over the past two years that they care nothing about the will of the people who elected them. They need to be kicked to the curb.
