On page 218 of their book Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin write:
But Bill [Clinton] then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.
Note the lack of quote marks around the statement attributed to Clinton. That means it’s a paraphrase, not a direct quote. That means that Heilemann and Halperin did not or could not verify that Clinton said those exact words — their source is not Kennedy or Clinton, but someone else who was supposedly aware of a later, alleged conversation between Kennedy and a “friend.” As The Plum Line’s Greg Sargent points out, the authors do indeed admit in their book: “Where dialog is not in quotes, it is paraphrased, reflecting only a lack of certainly on the part of our sources about precise wording, not about the nature of the statements.”
As Sargent notes, Clinton may have said something along those lines, but: “In cases like these, when people are hinting at racism, the precise wording is everything. And in this case, the whole claim is based on an anonymous source’s recollection that someone who has now passed away told him or her that Clinton said something like this.”
So why are news organizations treating this as an exact, direct quote?
Using an anonymous "friend" as a source is very typical of tabloids like the Enquirer and the Globe.
At any rate, I don't see how the alleged coffee comment is racist. If someone said Obama would be shining shoes or picking cotton or carrying bags, that would most certainly be racist. But getting coffee? That's more of a female stereotype than an African-American stereotype-- think of Lily Tomlin's character in "9 to 5" whose sexist pig boss would make her fetch his coffee all the time and wouldn't give her a promotion even though she was the most competent employee in their department.
Thanks for posting Jen. I also heard Bob Woodward of the Washington Post say the same. (quote) Who is the source in Hillary's camp that said that she was not fit to be President. What a shame that these two so called authors have to trash people when the Clintons are working so hard for the concerns of our country. Like the two wars we are in, the job situation, healthcare and Americas debts. The Clintons have devoted their whole adult life trying to make it better. Their service to our country is something to be admired, not trashed. Madame Secretary is on travel now. God Speed and safe travel and my prayers are for her safe return.
Well this book is the literary equivalent of the "National Inquirer" paper. Of course, Kennedy is not around to refute the statement attributed to him - not that he probably would if he were, since the intent is to smear the Clintons.
This is about the Obama folks trying to limit the power and popularity of the Clintons. From what I've seen and heard, Obama comes off looking pretty innocent. All the dirty work done to get him to run for POTUS is attributed to others. So what if a few players like Reid had to be sacrificed. No doubt it was worth it to take another hit at the Clintons.

According to various blog articles and comments I have read, the source for all the Hillary stuff in this book is most likely that turncoat/mole Patti Solis Doyle. Aside from her Obama connections, I wouldn't consider her a reliable source because she was gone pretty early on in the campaign. So basically, she's biased as far as whatever she did see or experience, plus there's a lot that she missed because she wasn't there. For example, she wouldn't have been around during the later primaries when Hillary's campaign was on a roll.
Edward R. Murrow is just rolling in his grave over what has become of our so-called "Fourth Estate".
Stamp!!
VotedHillary, I have missed you! Yes, I totally agree.
Hillary supporters have woken up with this book.
Meanwhile, the demise of the Fourth Estate would spell disaster for democracy. So, it is for us the people to take charge and overcome the biases and counter-act the unilateral declarations of the biased MSM.

All this is a bunch of crap. We all know every election year there is a hit put out on the Clintons to either try and derail them or people they support. A few years ago Barack obama had a failed bid to get into congress he would have been lucky to fetch anyone coffee besides I thought getting coffee and other refereshments were part of the job description of a community organizer.
rachel, you nailed it. In the CONTEXT OF EXPERIENCE, 'lucky to fetch coffee' is an expression of inexperience. Often used to indicate people wo are likely to bid for internships. [Yesterday Heraldo said on Hannity that he does not know the context; so could not categorize that statement]. Now all that assuming that the statement is indeed a quote from the man in the grave...
Yes a hit job by whoever for whatever goals.. not the least of which is money.

I am confused about where the alleged racism comes in from Yet no one gets pissed when Reid implyed that all black people speak with a negro dialect. I am not going to get angry about the first part because sadly that is more then likely true. Obama is President because he is light skinned. Sad but true.
Reid can utter offensive statements because he is Obama's pal and helped him get elected. Besides, there's so much at stake with this health care bill that Reid and Obama must keep a united front so they can pass that rotten bill.
But if someone Obama dislikes says anything-- or is even alleged to have said something-- that can be twisted and distorted to the point where some people see it as racist, then that person does not get a free pass. Bill Clinton's coffee remark falls into this category.

Its not Obama who is ticking me off I am ticked at the African American groups like NAACP for not saying a damn thing about this. They act just like NOW they only speak out against Republicans. Useless that's why I am done with them too. I left NOW and now I left the NAACP I am not surprised though just ticked off.
