Big-name Kennedy endorsements for Martha Coakley appear to have been little help to the Democrat in the U.S. Senate race - and may have even hurt her with some voters, a new Suffolk University/7News poll shows.
The late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s widow, Vicki, and nephew Joseph Kennedy II gave the attorney general their official blessing last week.
But of the 500 voters surveyed, only 20 percent said the Kennedy family nod made them more likely to vote for Coakley, and 27 percent said the endorsement made them less likely to support her.
More than half of voters - 52 percent - said the endorsements had no effect, and 2 percent were undecided or refused to answer.
“For independents, it doesn’t appear to have a positive effect. In fact, it may have had a negative effect,” said David Paleologis, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center.
The Jan. 7 endorsement featured Kennedy’s widow as well as former U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy II at a widely-covered news conference.
“It might have convinced some undecided Dems to come home, but the bigger picture block of voters is the independents,” said the Suffolk pollster.
Democrats were clamoring during the primary for the Kennedy endorsements. But waiting until less than two weeks before voters go to the polls - and with their only other option a Republican - the nod rang hollow with voters, Paleologos said.
Today, former President Bill Clinton hits the trail for Coakley. He is viewed favorably by 59 percent of voters, according to the poll, compared to 34 percent who view him unfavorably and 8 percent who remain undecided.
I hope Bill backs out and takes care of those in Haiti...people before party.
How interesting that endorsements of the Kennedys may do more harm than good. I know there was some speculation that the fact that Teddy died in office would garner more Democratic votes - out of respect and tradition. I wonder if the loss of votes due to the endorsements is, in large part, a reflection of disapproval of Ted's endorsement of Obama, along with the attempt to shove Caroline down the throats of the Dems in NY. Not to speak ill of the dead, but Teddy just looked stupid sitting on that stool behind Obama night after night, while the great speech maker blathered on and on about hope, change, unicorns, etc. during the campaign. Looks like the Kennedy power is dwindling.

I'd like to see the Democratic party wake up and start being the party of the people. If it takes a loss in Massachusetts to do it, then so be it. The whole Kennedys as royalty idea is simply out of touch. New York did not want Princess Caroline and Massachusetts appears close to making a point about to whom that seat belongs.

Yes, it is indeed quite interesting to find that Kennedy endorsement may harm. Then again, the dynasty/clan has been fading wth the many gossips from all sides of the family.
The party is finding that there is no real substitute to DOING THE RIGHT THINGS BY THE PEOPLE. That is where the party has promised loftily and failed miserably this year. As good as Martha Coakley is, she is feeling the pain of the party's unkept promises and miserable failures.
Elevating the party is something that the party leadership will need to do.

I think Bill needs to campaign for her because she was loyal with a capital L to Hillary staying by her until the very end. I am on the fence with this one folks. Love her but hate the health cae plan
Yep! Love Martha Coakley. The Health plan, not so much. LOL.
Scott Brown has significantly less experience..
Martha Coakley is not the flashy candidate, but she is quite solid.
Who knows, by the end of today/tomorrow, the health care plan maybe cemented already.. and if that is the case, I would most certainly want Martha Coakley over Brown.
And, yes, Martha Coakley was a VERY LOYAL supporter of Hillary. That carries a lot of weight in my book.
