Can the Clintons save Obama and the planet?

To state the obvious:

Obama is in trouble.

Health care is in trouble.

Haiti is in trouble.

And, on Tuesday, the state of Massachusetts may send a Republican to the Senate in Ted Kennedy’s old seat, which means all Democrats in Congress are in trouble.

So which SWAT team does President Barack Obama turn to? The Clintons.

The very same Clintons that the leaders of the currently, very unpopular Democratic leadership (read: Speaker Peloisi, Majority Leader Read, Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, Presidential Advisor, David Axelrod, Economic Adviser, Larry Summers, etc. etc.) all trashed during the 2008 Presidential campaign.

Now, these same people are clinging to the Clinton lifeboat.

To be more specific:

Obama is now below 50 percent approval rating in a raft of polls. Can’t blame the “vast right wing conspiracy” for those results.

The Congressional ratings, the Speaker’s ratings, and Harry Reid’s numbers all suggest early retirements, or imminent electoral defeat, for a host of Democratic incumbents.

The Obama’’s favorability rating is tanking, due to closed door meetings on health care; the broken promises of transparency; the troika deals of Geithner, Summers, and Axelrod-that gave the big banks billions in bonuses from the use of taxpayer money-and a penchant for “breezy arrogance,” and inflated claims on jobs “created or saved.”

In short, Obama has lost the trust of the majority of Americans-as have a host of incumbent politicians.

The Democrats response? “Rahm” through an unpopular health care bill (any health care bill, really), regardless of the cost or political consequences.

What is obvious to everyone except the White House, is that the American public does not want this health care bill with all the boondoggles that taxpayers have come to loathe.

In thinking reminiscent of the Vietnam War era, the Obama administration may “destroy the Democratic party in order to save it.” And the health care bill-reform in name only-may be the final bludgeon.

Never mind the imploding poll numbers for members of his own party, President Obama’s team needs an applause line in his State of the Union address.

And to get it, the chance of the first woman elected Senator from the liberal, heavily Democratic state of Massachusetts, is in serious trouble.

A relatively unknown Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts, Scott Brown is currently leading, or in a toss up race with the Democratic Attorney General, Martha Coakley. (See: Suffolk poll, Rasmussen poll, Rothenberg Report, Cook Report).

How did this happen in a state that Obama won with 62 percent of the vote?

Simple, the Republican candidate promised to stop the health care bill from passage by breaking the filibuster-proof Democratic majority.

Undoing the adage, “all politics is local” (coined ironically, by then Massachusetts Congressman and Speaker of the House, Tip O’Neil’s father), the Republicans are proving that “all politics are national.”

Furthermore, anyone watching the polls during the primary race could see firsthand the anger in Massachusetts. The voters stayed away. In one voting center that I visited, there were four language interpreters, one security office, and several poll workers, but only two voters. This was in the heavily Reagan Democrat, Irish-Catholic “southie” precinct.

Down the street, the 99cent store was packed with people trying to stretch their money to buy food and cheap winter caps.

Enter the Clintons

Former President, Bill Clinton, not only taped robo calls for Coakley, but also put in two appearances for her on Friday.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has deep roots in Massachusetts, where she attended Wellesley College as an undergrad, carried the primary win over Obama 53 percent to 42 percent.

In that race, Clinton  enjoyed the endorsement of almost every Democrat, except Sens. Kerry and Kennedy and Gov. Duval Patrick, who is also now unpopular.

Coakley, an early and energetic supporter of Clinton’s presidential run, will receive all the aid the Clintons can muster.

Obama is not as popular as Clinton in Massachusetts (or almost anywhere else in the country).

They need Bill in Massachusetts to save the Democrat, who will save health care, and Obama’s signature “achievement.”

Hence, Bill’s rock star appearances in Boston.

Any campaign appearance by the President might turn into another failure-like the trip to Copenhagen to secure Chicago the Olympics.

The White House decided to take the risk and double down with Clinton’s appearance. Obama is scheduled to appear Sunday to help rally the troops and drive some media attention Coakley’s way.

Still, Clinton has his hands full.

He is also the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, and has been helping that island of tragedy for some years. Obama has tapped Bill and former President, George W. Bush, to spearhead the private fundraising drive to help pay for the rescue of Haiti from the rubble.

Overseeing U.S. government aid to Haiti, is the other Clinton, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Turning her plane around en route to her Asian diplomatic trip, Clinton began swiftly and diligently responding to the metaphoric “three a.m. phone call.”

The disaster relief response of the Obama Administration (read: Hillary) will undoubtedly be compared to the nightmare response during Katrina (read: Bush).

The enormous, nearly impossible task of rescue, relief, and rebuilding that devastated country, will undoubtedly task Hillary’s considerable talents.

If Bill Clinton can help see Coakley over the finish line in Massachusetts, (and thereby save the Democratic super-majority and thus, pass the health care bill); and if Hillary Clinton can oversee a competent and possibly exemplary team in Haiti, then the Democratic party, and the Obama administration, may survive to fight another day.

If not, the Democrats need a Plan B to rescue themselves, from a potential political disaster of “biblical” proportions. The Republicans can simply recycle the old Nancy Reagan bumper stickers, “Just Say No."

What a great find. Thanks for sharing that.

Clintons are the ever-ready, ever-energized, and ever-strategic executives.  They are tireless, and incredibly resourceful.

Yes, when times have turned tough and walls are closing in on all sides, Pres.Obama has turned to the Clintons.  And, they are doing a bang up job of performance execution.

President Clinton has hit every TV channel possible it seems.. and key magazines with articles.

The Clinton Foundation http://www.clintonfoundation.org is busily fundraising for Haiti already.

State Department is working hard on fundraising and as of this evening had raised $10M and counting.  Text HAITI to 90999 - donates $10 via phonebill.

Hillary is going to Haiti tomorrow.

Pres.Clinton has done robocalls recording for Coakley and is personally campaigning for Coakley; he is engaged with the Congresspeople.  Somehow, that gives me some comfort.  The fact is, if this opportunity is missed, likelihood of any health care reform goes to zilch. Perhaps if this goes through more amendments can be done in the future to bring it to what it needs to be. Well, I hope.

Of all the people, I am glad Pres.Obama turned to the Clintons.  Well, they were the people best situated for this. Pres.Clinton as the embassador and long-time proponent of Haiti, and SOS Clinton in her role. She gave it the urgency it deserved.

Hats off to the Clintons. They are truly inspirational. 

Can they save Obama?  Well, they just might.   This week, Pres.Obama gave one of his better speeches; his words and projected emotions were in sync... in his speech on Haiti.  I saw more genuine concern.  Haiti's situation is so dire that whatever we do will be insufficient in the short-turn, and in the long-run, their geographic location and the earthquakes make it a difficult land in which to build without drastically changing their way of building houses.  It will take more than a year to truly rebuild Haiti - that assuming international aid pouring into Haiti at fast pace.

As to U.S. Health care reform, whatever happens is not the ideal situation.  Martha Coakley may squeeze through this election, but then what.  Will the people be happy with the bill? Time will tell.

I only hope that Teddy, where ever he is, is aware that his senate seat is about to be handed to a Republican. And, that it is Obama and Ted's own left- wing of the Dem party who are handing this Republican this seat on a silver platter.

Frankly, I find it audacious of the Dems to keep calling on Bill to bail them out after they pegged him as a racist during the 2008 primary...and the way the stayed silent instead of calling out the sexism in the media towards Hillary.

But, the Clintons prove to me time and again that when all is said and done, they WILL do the right thing.

That's such a true statement, VH.  It's so obvious to us - yet they continue to get bashed at every turn - and by people who are just trying to spin and lie to make a few political points.  We have seen Karma at work over the past few months, with the chickens of the lying Democrats coming home to roost.  Those who are spinning their lies and talking points about the Clintons might want to invest in a farm.  They're gonna need a place for all the poultry headed their way.

Hi Sanders, good to see you as well!

I absolutely agree -- the Clintons are very inspirational, especially Hillary (my favorite Clinton). Even in my own life, I've often found myself looking to Hillary as a role model on how to keep going when you don't think you can etc.

The work they are both doing here is incredible and is a veritable testimony to all the wonderful things they have done for us for so many years.

Thank you so much Hillary (and Bill), your tenacity, grace, and courage continue to inspire so many of us.

So true. Those monsters do not deserve any help, but let's face it, they have no one else to turn to at this point. They are shameless, reduced to begging, and one can't help but enjoy a bit of schadenfreude at the thought. LOL.

Bill needs to help Martha and is doing so because the Clinton's are loyal.  I wouldn't be counting on either Clinton to save every Democrat Martha is a loyal Clintonista I expect them to help all of the people loyal to the Clintons.
They also have principals and would not want to see any President fail not even the man who called him racist. 
I am here to tell you this that anything Obama do is gonna fail until he does right by Bill Clinton. That was wrong to call him a racist and yet defend Harry Reid not to mention putting Biden on the ticket.

STAMP!!  Yes,  Obama needs to do the right things by Bill Clinton and Hillary. Any put down of either Hillary or Bill Clinton will not bode well.  The more he embraces them in the presidency, the better his chances of success... and of us forgiving his trespasses from 2008.  Hillary is a big heart and forgave many of his deeds but hey, it takes a lot more for me to forgive bird flips.

The Clintons are principled people when it comes to public service.  And their work on Haiti in combination with the promotion of Coakley may just do the needful for Coakley.
