Blunt tops Carnahan in latest Senate race poll

Republican Rep. Roy Blunt has a six-point lead over Democrat Robin Carnahan in the Missouri Senate contest, according to the latest Rasmussen Poll.

The telephone survey showed Blunt ahead, 49 percent to 43 percent, over Carnahan, the Missouri secretary of state. Five percent was undecided.

Larry Sabato, a political analyst at the University of Virginia, predicted that Blunt would win if the election were held today, according to Rasmussen Reports.

Last month’s Rasmussen survey had Carnahan in the lead, 46 percent to 44 percent.

Rasmussen Reports speculated that opposition to health care reform could be a factor. The poll showed that 62 percent of Missouri voters oppose the Democratic health care plan, while 37 percent favor it.

More Missourians appear to like Carnahan better than they do Blunt. Nearly a quarter of state voters have a very favorable opinion of her, according to the poll. She is the daughter of the late Gov. Mel Carnahan and former Sen. Jean Carnahan.

Just 15 percent of the voters view Blunt very favorably, the poll said. He has been a congressman since 1997, a former member of the House Republican leadership and father of former Gov. Matt Blunt.

State Sen. Chuck Purgason is challenging Blunt for the Republican nomination to the Senate.

The seat will be available because Republican Sen. Kit Bond is retiring this year after four terms.

=====================================

Roy Blunt (R) v. Robin Carnahan (D) is very close race at present.  Robin Carnahan has the advantage of being an outsider to Washington and a household family name in Missouri.  Blunt had a lead in the polls that has been thinning down lately.
