Generic ballot polls suggest possible epic party disaster for Dems

By: Michael Barone
Senior Political Analyst

The Real Clear Politics average on the generic ballot  now shows Republicans ahead 46%-42%. This is historically unprecedented.

Except for a single CNN/USA Today poll conducted right after the Republican National Convention, September 5-7, 2008, which seems to have been an outlier, Republicans didn’t take the lead on the generic ballot—which party’s candidate will you vote for in House races—until  March 9-15, 2009, in Rasmussen polling (which samples likely voters and whose results have therefore leaned more Republican than those of other pollsters since Barack Obama’s inauguration). Republicans since took a lead in the NPR poll (July 22-26), Gallup (November 5-8), Bloomberg News (December 3-7), Battleground (December 6-10), CNN/Opinion Research (January 8-10) and Democracy Corps (January 7-11).

I blogged on the generic vote in December and twice in November. Gallup analyst Jeffrey M. Jones provides useful historic perspective.

“Since Gallup regularly began using the generic ballot to measure registered voters' preferences for the House of Representatives in 1950, it has been rare for Republicans to have an advantage over Democrats. This is likely because more Americans usually identify as Democrats than as Republicans, but Republicans can offset this typical Democratic advantage in preferences with greater turnout on Election Day. Most of the prior Republican registered-voter leads on the generic ballot in Gallup polling occurred in 1994 and 2002, two strong years for the GOP.”

Over the years Republicans have tended to do better in actual House elections than they have on the generic vote question -- although in recent cycles less so, perhaps because the balance of enthusiasm so clearly favored Democrats in 2006 and 2008. But the balance of enthusiasm has clearly changed.

Rasmussen’s tight likely-voter screen has been pretty consistently producing more pro-Republican responses than other polls, and recent generic vote results from other pollsters tend to validate his results. Thus CNN/Opinion Research shows all adults as 46%-45% Republican and registered voters as 48%-45% Republican. Democracy Corps, run by Democrats Stanley Greenberg and James Carville, shows likely voters at 41%-41% and “dropoff voters” at 43%-25% Democratic. NPR, conducted jointly by Public Opinion Strategies (R) and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner (D), shows Republicans ahead among likely voters 44%-39%.

[snip]

Of course, the elections will not be held today. [snip]

Nonetheless, what we have here are the makings of an epic party disaster. Whether it comes to pass is still uncertain. But it certainly could.

Yes, the election is not held today.... but I cannot WAIT until November.

Anytime I even think about voting for a lunatic marxist, which is now what the dimocrat party has been... all I gotta remember is December 24th at 1AM ALL these losers were casting a vote for 2.5 Trillion dollar bill... THAT NO ONE HAD EVEN FREAKING READ!

They abused their power... and I will NOT trust them with unchecked power ever again!

Voting all repub/conservatives straight down the line in November ! If it has a "D", I am voting and campaigning against it!

True, but not every Dem voted 'for' the HCR bills.

I would be very careful to not swing to the far right extreme to avoid a far left agenda; it is no longer needed, as the nation has woken up to it, and the Congress knows to not push it down our throats.

So, in the coming elections, I am looking for -
- moderate candidates (social moderate, fiscal conservative preferably, even fiscal moderates ok).
- confident in their own skin that they do not have to take on false ego
- WILLING and ABLE to work with other side.

I am looking closely at every race and will be posting here along with their voting records. One of the links that is sticky in Main Room here leads to a site that gives voting record on TARP and HCR. Let's pay attention to what they say and what they do.

true, not every HOUSE dim voted for this PO$ rationcare bill.

but EVERY Senate dimocrat did. I do not trust ANY of them.

No one party should ever have any control. No moderates... all conservatives or as close as I can get is what I will be voting for and campaigning for.

I want true conservatives in there... not necessarily repubs, they too spend like crazy as well and try to ram their social views on me.

Just govern according to the founding fathers, less govt, lower taxes, strong defense, fiscal responsiblity, respect for indiv rights.  As for the social issues, I don't care about a politician;s social views....  just don't force your social views on me via govt policies.

After eight long years of George W. Bush, Democrats should be screaming ahead of the Republicans.  Only by installing such a nincompoop could the Creepy Corporate Cabal ensure that Republicans would be able to regain their former power.

And Dean fell for it.  Aren't doctors supposed to have a brain in their heads?  I know a lot of others fell for the trick, but I was going to vote for this guy.  Then again, I was going to vote for Edwards...ashamedbleh

It's conservatives all the way with me. I am definitely looking at their voting records.

Look at NY23. The dem that took over that seat (his name just escaped me when typing this), said he wouldn't vote for the health care bill. Then he did a 180 and voted for it. These poor people voted for a schiester with the understanding that he'd support the constituents wishes.

We can't continue on this same road. Lady Liberty is at risk.

As a Conservative I am voting for Moderates because that is what I prefer to  vote.  I don't want social issues in the hands of either Conservatives or liberals.
I would like to see NY lose both of its current Senators.  Schumer has to go.  Shame really but he betrayed Hillary or its possible that he did just that.  He has to go.
I am angry at all the Democratic Senators who voted for this disaster.

I am a moderate and my state's Senator election is going to be another "hold my nose" affair.  It will be Spector vs. Toomey.  Spector is a joke, but Toomey is way too far right for me.  I can't believe this is going to be my "choice".

Ugh.

The governor race isn't going to be much better either.

I am ticked at Spector who I prefer but he voted for that health care disaster so I am not sure what I am going to do.  I wonder who is running for Gov.  I heard Onarato is going to run.

At least for 2010, I'll support any candidate for Sen or Representative who IS NOT a Dem - unless he/she is a bat-sh** crazy, radical right winger, in which case I'll have to re-think.

This is our opportunity for a major protest vote. We know what the DNC did in 2008. And, even if it had been Jane Q Public, rather than Hillary clinton, that they stole the nomination from, it was theft nonetheless. IMO, the actions of the DNC in taking Hillary's votes to give to The Fraud; bribing and threatening SD's; demanding that Hillary quit, when she was winning, EVERYTHING - these actions were so crooked and corrupt that they cannot be overlooked as politics as usual. The DNC needs to be sent a message: subverting democracy is unacceptable. The only thing that will drive that message home - election losses.
