Former Tennessee congressman Harold Ford Jr. says he's decided not to challenge Kirsten Gillibrand (KEHR'-sten JIL'-uh-brand) for U.S. Senate in New York's Democratic primary because he doesn't want to divide the party.

Ford says in a New York Times op-ed posted online Monday he refuses to do anything that would help a Republican win the seat. He says a primary would be "highly negative."

Ford spent seven weeks traveling the state and meeting party leaders. He was gauging support for a possible challenge to Gillibrand, who was appointed by New York's governor when Hillary Rodham Clinton became U.S. secretary of state.

A Gillibrand spokesman says the senator will "wage a vigorous campaign."

Harold Ford Jr.: Democrats Are "Scared" (MSNBC Morning Joe Video clip on RCP)

=============================

What Ford Jr. says is very true. The Reps and the Senators have not been in touch with the base. They have a tough fight this time.

He didn't exactly decide not to run on his own. There was never much interest in Harold. Yes, November will likely be very interesting.

True, freespirit.

I think Ford Jr. embarrassed himself in his exit.

Some of what Ford Jr. says are very true - west of Albany is tough market for Gillibrand.. which BTW is a shift from what it was with Hillary. Hillary's shoes are not easy to walk into!

But in favor of Gillibrand is the fact that central and western NY have really turned favorable to electing women in politics - a great by product of Hillary Clinton's stellar work in this region.
