Clinton warns Netanyahu that U.S.-Israeli relationship is at risk

"Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Friday that the U.S.-Israeli relationship is at risk unless Israel took immediate steps to demonstrate it was interested in renewing efforts at a Middle East peace agreement.

Clinton's phone call, made in the wake of the embarrassment suffered by Vice President Biden this week when Israel announced it would build 1,600 housing units in a disputed area of Jerusalem, was an unusually tough message for the longtime U.S. ally. It came two days after Biden condemned the action while in Israel, and demonstrated that Netanyahu's efforts to mollify the administration have fallen short. He has claimed that he did not know the announcement was coming but has not canceled the project.

Relations with Israel have been strained during the Obama administration, and Biden's trip was intended as a fence-mending mission. Now it has led to the biggest crisis between the two countries in years.

Clinton called the prime minister "to make clear the United States considered the announcement a deeply negative signal about Israel's approach to the bilateral relationship and counter to the spirit of the vice president's trip," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters at his regular news briefing. Clinton, he said, reinforced "this action had undermined trust and confidence in the peace process and in America's interests."

Crowley added: "The secretary said she could not understand how this happened, particularly in light of the United States' strong commitment to Israel's security, and she made clear that the Israeli government needed to demonstrate not just through words but through specific actions that they are committed to this relationship and to the peace process.""

Clinton slams Israel on housing announcement

"WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday delivered a stinging rebuke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his government's announcement this week of new Jewish housing in East Jerusalem.

The State Department said Clinton spoke to Netanyahu by phone to express U.S. frustration with Tuesday's announcement that cast a pall over a visit to Israel by Vice President Joe Biden. A State spokesman said the Israeli move has endangered indirect peace talks with the Palestinians that the Obama administration had announced just a day earlier.

Clinton called "to make clear that the United States considered the announcement to be a deeply negative signal about Israel's approach to the bilateral relationship and counter to the spirit of the vice president's trip," department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters.

The harsh criticism of America's closest Mideast ally and questions about its commitment to the U.S.-Israeli relationship followed equally blunt condemnation of the housing announcement from the White House and Biden himself."

Clinton warns Netanyahu on U.S. ties

"Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday that his government was putting U.S. ties at risk by failing to take real steps toward renewed Mideast peace talks.

Clinton telephoned Netanyahu and expressed frustration over Israel's announcement on Tuesday of new settlement construction, a move that deeply embarrassed visiting U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and cast doubt over plans to launch indirect negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Clinton told Netanyahu the announcement was a "deeply negative signal about Israel's approach to the bilateral relationship ... and had undermined trust and confidence in the peace process."

"The secretary said she could not understand how this happened, particularly in light of the United States' strong commitment to Israel's security," Crowley said.

"She made clear that the Israeli government needed to demonstrate not just through words but through specific actions that they are committed to this relationship and to the peace process," he said.

Asked if the tone of the call was angry, Crowley said "frustration would be a better term.""

Clinton rebukes Israel over settler homes

"WASHINGTON — In a rare, sharp rebuke, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Friday chided Israel for plans to build new settler homes saying it sent a "deeply negative signal" about Israel's ties to its top ally.

In unusually harsh words, Clinton told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington strongly objected to the announcement made during a landmark trip to Israel by US Vice President Joe Biden.

"The United States considered the announcement a deeply negative signal about Israel's approach to the bilateral relationship," the top US diplomat told Netanyahu in an early Friday morning call.

And she added that it ran "counter to the spirit of the vice president's trip," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters.

It was an unusually strong rebuke from the United States for its main regional ally and came as Israel Friday sealed off the West Bank amid tensions in Jerusalem over the plans.

Israel announced Tuesday during Biden's visit that 1,600 new settler homes would be built in predominantly Arab east Jerusalem."

I thought this line from the OP was pretty funny:

"Clinton's phone call, made in the wake of the embarrassment suffered by Vice President Biden"

Hillary having to clean up after Barack and Biden now also? Why am I not surprised?!? smile
