CBO: $940 billion health bill would help cut deficit over 10 years

Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, March 18, 2010; 12:45 PM

An emerging compromise on health care between House and Senate Democrats would cost $940 billion over the next decade and expand insurance coverage to an additional 32 million Americans, congressional budget analysts said Thursday. Their preliminary report suggests the two-part legislation would bring the nation closer to universal health coverage than at any time in its history.

The bill -- to be unveiled Thursday and likely voted on Sunday in the House -- also would increase Medicare payroll taxes for wealthy families, in part by applying the tax for the first time to investment income.

The cost of expanding coverage would exceed $200 billion a year by 2019, the CBO said. But new revenue in the package, combined with savings from program cuts, would outpace the cost of coverage, reducing the federal deficit by $138 billion over the next 10 years. The savings would continue to accumulate in the decade thereafter, the CBO said, eventually slicing around $1.2 trillion from the nation's budget gap.

biggrin Well, those CBO numbers are "debatable" to say the least. What I can't seem to understand is how a plan that is supposed to cost around 1T (and I think much much more) could ever lower the deficit.

"The Congressional Budget Office has confirmed that there is currently no official cost estimate. Yet House Democrats are touting to the press — and spinning for partisan gain — numbers that have not been released and are impossible to confirm. Rep. James Clyburn stated he was ‘giddy’ about these unsubstantiated numbers. This is the latest outrageous exploitation by the Majority — in this case abusing the confidentiality of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office — to pass their massive health care overhaul at any cost.” - Rep. Paul Ryan (R-MN), 03/18/10

no See, if that's true, the news to the WaPo is whatever Hoyer says it is. Orwellian world these days.

Hehehe! True Ebinger, we never know.

CBO is in general the "unaligned" neutral party. BUT, everything about this Presidency including its ascent has been topsey-turvey... and this past year has not helped engender any greater level of confidence.

If anything, I respect Pelosi a bit more for the more "together" way in which she has executed her duties. Despite all pressures she has been under, we have not heard of a single blow up.. not one bad word, not one put down.. and she has been quite classy. No, I do not like her plasticky looks either.. but she has ruled with iron fist and tough love all at once. I have heard that it is brutal for anyone to be on the wrong side of Pelosi..

The numbers from CBO.. I understood them as 1 Trillion for structural (establishment) costs of getting the HCR basics launched.. but the savings are from Medicare side. I wish CBO published a REAL report for citizens to read. It would have helped.. but I suppose the President does not want "too much" transparency especially when it might come from a neutral party!

The country badly needs HCR... I just wish it was a better bill. But, it is a bit too late for getting a better bill.

I can just imagine the talk between Rep.Dennis Kucinich and Pres.Obama in AF1. What do you think happened? I dont think it was strong-arming. From the video clips I saw, that is genuine endorsement, fully internalizing the gravity of the situation... knowing that if this moment is lost, all Dems are out with it, there is no HCR in this and possibly not for another 8 years...

Pres.Obama needed to give this much better leadership. I hope his supporters write major articles in the coming weeks on all things he has done wrong to load us with this poor excuse of a HCR that sits in front of our Reps - who are pretty well damned if they do/dont in assent to it.
