US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will make a one-day visit to Mexico next week to discuss bilateral issues including organized crime, the Mexican and US governments said Friday.
Clinton will meet on Monday with Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa in the city of Guanajuato, in central Mexico some 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of the capital, the Mexican foreign ministry and US State Department said.
Collaboration on fighting Mexico’s violent drug gangs will be on the agenda, as will the closely-tied countries’ competitiveness as they emerge from the financial crisis, and infrastructure development along their 2,000-mile (3,000-kilometer) border.
The pair will discuss “joint cooperation to combat organized crime, strengthening the competitiveness of our two economies, modernizing the border between our countries and advancing the global climate change agenda after the Cancun Summit,” Clinton spokesman Philip Crowley said in a statement.
The visit comes as drug violence continues to plague parts of Mexico, including a string of attacks in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco and the northern business hub of Monterrey since the start of the year.
